Can some one enlighten me on the proper way to wire the 24v trolling motor to a pair of 12v batteries? My friends boat has a bridge between the – terminal to the + terminal (which I thought was always a major NO NO) Is this what they call running it in series ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, this is called a series.
Trolling motor’s positive to the first battery positive
Trolling motor’s negative to the second battery negative
Then run a short cable to the first battery negative to the second battery’s positive. This is 24 volts.

Your friend has it wired correctly, and slider described it properly.

You can still hook up 12V accessories to batteries hooked in series also. Just be sure you hook the leads to a single battery and it will still be 12V. If you have doubt, check it with a volt meter 1st.

The NO NO that you are referring to is a short circuit which would involve connecting the “+” and “-” of the same battery to itself with nothing in between. With your 24 volt rig, you could still have problems if you connected the “-” of battery 1 to the “+” of battery 2.
