Planer boards: Flag up or down?

I just purchased two Church Walleye Boards with the flag upgrade kits. Does it work better to have the flag go up or down when a fish strikes? If you start flag up, is the wind more likely to knock the boards around due to more surface area being exposed?

Of course my hope is that the fish I catch will simply drag the board under the water like a bobber.

How should I set these up?

It does not matter which you set it up for. We use the Church boards too….but without flags. In the past I’ve used flags…having them up first will not affect them with wind due to surface area like you mentioned…..If it is windy enough for that to occur, the wave action will override the surface area being hit by the wind. Hope you like the boards…..I like the way they run and the way they are easy to quickly take line off of when there is a fish on.

lol I just caught the part about the board being dragged under like a bobber…good one….that is always fun when that happens! hard to pull it in but fun when they go under all the way due to a big fish…..that happened to us on bay de noc once…. toward cedar river….. first we thought it was hung up (the line)……..then we couldn’t tell what it was………ended up being a HUGE carp…… it was hilarious…….

Curt, I don’t run the Church boards, but in my experience rarely do not run the flags up on my boards. The only time I have a problem with the tattle flags is when I’m pulling deep divers that pull really hard.

If you want to see a board go down like a bobber, plan a spring run to Erie. It’s the best “bobber” bite around in the spring!!
