GPS antenna mounting help

I’m wondering if anyone can offer up an idea of a creative way to mount my GPS antenna so that I can still get my boat cover on. My ideal location would be on the gunnel, either slightly ahead of the console, or on the back corner of the boat. The problem with that is, that if I put it there, I can’t get my cover on. I could take the cover in and get someone to sew in a little hood for it, but would rather not do that. I would like to mount it using some type of system that would allow me to just unhook it from the gunnel when I want to put the cover on. I store the boat inside, so it isn’t covered that often, unless I’m towing in the rain or on a trip somewhere.

Anybody have a system that works or a plausible idea of a semi-permanent mounting solution?

    Thanks in advance.

Velcro is what I used. Walmart has the sticky back kind and it works great.

Just got the Cabela’s Angling Master catalog. In the section for depth finders, there is a plate that fits on a standard R-A-M mount that allows you to mount the GPS puck right behing the depthfiner. It was around $14. DOn’t know if this will work for you.

depending on your boat and type of gunnels you have, you can get a double hinge mount for you ant. so you can mount it on the inside of the gunnel and not on top of it. so when stored will not interfere with the cover.

    Jack,

Any chance you have a picture or a link to where I could aquire one of those? Sounds like just what I’m looking for. If it isn’t, I’m going to go the velcro route I think.

For what it’s worth,…. I tried this Cabela’s mounting base on my new Lowrance 26cHD – on my RAM. It did not work for me. My GPS continually lost the signal. I believe the unit covers the puck too much(?). I’ve now velcro’d the puck on the dash and it works great.

Get a rubber suction cup that are used for sticking portable transducers on your hull and mount your GPS module on to that. Then you can pop it on and off anyplace/anytime you want.

Ugh….. Splitshot, I wish I’d seeen your post sooner. I just mounted my 480, and I am using the Cabelas mount. It did work in the driveway, but I have yet to try it on the water. I am headed out next weekend, and I will post my results. As a side note, I ordered the 480, plus the Navionics Gold, plus a VHF from Wade, and all I can say is WADE RULES!!!!! I would HIGHLY recommend anyone in the market for electronics to try Wade first.

Finally got the boat on the water last weekend, and everywhere I was on Pool 4, I had a very good signal from the satellites, and was able to recieve the WAAS as well, and this was with the antenna mounted on the Cabelas/RAM bracket, which is mounted on the side console of my boat. I did lose the 3D Nav & WAAS when I tilted the unit so that it covered the antenna. I did this so I could see the screen better when I was standing up, which obviously I don’t do all the time. As soon as I tilted it back down, the good signals were back. So I guess my thoughts on the bracket are so far, so good. I haven’t decided yet if I want to tear the console apart again and run another wire to mount the antenna in another location. Hope this helps.
