    marcus1, The terms are basically used interchangeably these days. You tend to see folks on the coast and great lakes area use the term chartplotter more than around here. The term chartplotter does imply that the GPS unit has a basemap and that you can plot trails and waypoints etc. (important to fishermen but even more important to an ocean-going oil rigger). A “GPS” could mean that it has a basemap but it could also be a more simple unit that has no basemap. An example would be the Garmin GPS 76 . You can see that you can use it for navigation and to mark yor spots etc., but there is no “map” on this unit, nor can one be loaded to the unit.

    Around here, I think you’ll hear folks refer to a GPS with mapping or with basemap or a GPS without mapping or without basemap more than you’ll hear the term “chartplotter”.
