Garmin GPS and Fishfinders

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have ordered a Garmin GPS 172 map system, and a 250C color fish finder. One of the big bonuses with this system is that you can actually save waypoints to the 172 from the 250C. You can wire the units as such that they can data transfer. The attachment above is a Word document explaining how to do it.

I have a FF250 and am in the market for a chartplotter. Have looked at the Garmin units. Why would I want to connect the two together? Can you please elaborate on this? I’m biased towards the Garmin simply because I already have 2 fishfinders and a handheld from them and have been pleased. However, I want to make the chartplotter decision based in part on which units offer the best mapping software and all the options confuse me. Seems to me all you can put on Garmins is the Garmin MapSource data that comes on a CD-ROM and you download it from your PC to the unit? Some folks have said the Garmin MapSource maps are poor and recommend the Navionics stuff instead, thus shifting a fellow towards Lowrance. Opinions on this topic please. Thanks.

If you are running a 250C in another spot in your boat, away from your map, you can do it remotely. Say if I am at the bow mount, and my 250C is there, I can save the waypoint from up there. I use the Lakemaster Chip, and the software to share data from my laptop to my GPS and vica-versa.

    Tuck,

Why not the 178C and have sonar in both locations. Only another Franklin and if your 250C ever fails you’ll be able to see what your fishing over!
Great prices on both units at Cabela’s. (178C and 250C)
Even if you run these units side by side, for only a 100.00 you have sonar backup if you ever need it.
There’s not too many color sonars avail. at that price.
Or are you running another unit at the bow and the 172 and 250 side by side? So you have backup somewhere on the new rig.

    Just curious,

    Dan,
Ever tried running across Mille Lacs at 50 MPH trying to read a map or Fish Finder at the same time? 320 pixels on the fish finder and 480 on the map is HUGE! Try splitting the two on a 178C! Not that it cannot be done! I did it for years with a 188! I still have a 188 on board. It is a great unit! I ran the 188 and 240’s in tandem, and loved them! Mapping on the 188 was fantastic! Plus I could still run split screen on the 240 for mid lake basin trolling! One half could watch the water column, and half could watch the second half of the water column. I could also set the depth line to ensure I picked the right crank bait to run at that depth based on speed and line diameter/lure.
