I have a lowrance global map 2000 5-6 yrs old . How are they as a unit and is it worth getting chips for it. there is a separate unit under the dash for the cards. Are they easy to come by and are they worth buying. Is the sonar part of the unit a decent one. Thinking of replacing it if they are not a good unit.
Any info on them would be great.

I’ve got a Global Map 2000 as well. The unit is 10 years old, but I had the receiver upgraded a couple of years ago.

The map cards are available from Lowrance for about $100 a piece. They are no where near as good as what is available with the newer units. Just pretty generic maps, but the GPS function is fine.

I guess it depends on what you want to get out of it.

I have a Global Maps 2400 that is a bit old but it works just fine. I was looking to buy a chip for it and Wade from Jolly Marine said I probably need to stay with the Navionics Classics maps. Those chips run $199. The GPS function of the unit works great and it is easy to drop icons and mark your trail. I don’t think I’m going to spend the money for the chip. I’d rather save my pennies and get a new one in the next year. Just like with most electronic items these days, they keep getting better and cheaper at the same time!

I have a global map 2000 with sonar.

    It is ok.

    No WAAS.
No contour mapping chips, only surface.
sonar is “ok”, but not great.

For the money, I would buy a new Eagle intellimap with sonar for $350 from wade.

Just to clarify, the map for $199 is the River map. I agree with your decision to wait and upgrade. You will eventually want a unit that can run the new maps.

Contact Wade or go to LEI. I believe LEI has a couple of chips left…….

My honest opinion is that I wouldn’t put too much money into this unit. The mapping chip you are going to buy is very generic. You will not getting any lake detail, like you do with the new mapping chips and GPS systems.
