I’m getting my gear ready for the open water season and am going to spool up a couple of cranking rods with some kind of superline. I am debating between Power Pro and Fireline, or if anyone else has any other suggestions. I was wondering if anyone has any opinions or if there is a previous post on the subject.

My experience with the two is that Fireline greys and frays. I’ve had much less of those issues with PowerPro. I used Fireline for two years and made the switch to PowerPro three years ago. Haven’t looked back since.

I’ve used both, but the past couple years I have switched to all PowerPro. To me, it’s less slippery and easier to tie knots…and they hold! I also didn’t like how fireline was so hard to cut and usually frayed. PowerPro has some type of waxy coating that leaves a dust on your eyelets and reel, but it goes away after the first use and has never caused me any problems. One other thing, I use to get a lot of break-offs with fireline, but since I switched I rarely get any…that’s in the same line class diameter, too! Good luck in your decision making, but give PowerPro a try.

do u have to replace these kind of lines every year or can you leave it on there for a few years.

Well…. I started with Fireline and yes after a few years it frays and fades. I tried Power Pro and had multiple bad issues with it . I went back to Fireline. However, I have recently mad a switch to Spider Wire Stealth and can not be any happier . I would sugggest giving this line a thought Jason. It has a thinner diameter for gettng those plugs down deeper,is round like Power Pro and will not cut into your reel like Fireline. I know a few other Hard-Core trollers here have been using it for years now, that is what made me try it and I’m now in the porcess of swithcing out all my trolling rods to Spider Wire Stealth (Moss Green).

You do not have to replace these lines every year. I have some Fireline on for almost 3 years now and still feel like it will perform. I have some Spider Wire Stealth that seen a ton of action last year and still looks brand new.

What pound test are you using in the Spiderwire, the 8 or 15? and what about the Pro are you using the 10 #?

Since we are on the subject of superlines…I know many of you use these superlines for trolling, what about jigging rods? I have been using Fireline for two years now on my jigging rods and really like the sensitivity. Is anyone using superlines on jigging rods? If so, what brand to you prefer?

Jason, I run the 10 lb test / 2 lb diameter Moss Green for Long Lining and Planer Boards.

Johnny, I still use 8 lb. Fire Line for my Rigging / Lindy Rod on the pond. I do play with different lines for my snells though. Anything from 6 lb Fireline to 4-8 lb Vanish Tranisiton. Depnding on the mood of the fish.

For Jigging I also still use Fireline. For the river I use 8 lb Flame Green and for vertical I have a spool of 8lb Smoke. I know everyone says to use Hi-Vis mono for the river, but I really like the Fireline. You are right the Sensitivity is unreal.

    JBongers,

I switched 2 to Power Pro last year and they are all going to it this year. By the way it was nice to meet you this weekend at Hunter’s. I was the guy talking to George about moving my house there.

I’m a huge fan of fireline on spinning gear, but find it doesn’t work well with casting gear, it seems as though it like to bury itself on the spool. I never really jumped on the power pro bandwagon but have to agree with Lip Ripper on the Spider Wire Stealth. I have had great luck with this stuff on casting gear for crankin around weeds and fishin slop.

Thanks for the info I think I’m leaning towards the Spiderwire Stealth.

Nice to meet you too EJ

I hate Fire Line. It frays out, it can be difficult to tie knots, it doesnt cast very well compared to others.. and it eats up the eyes on your rods, especially the tip. It does have basic superline advantages.. sensitivity and minimal stretch.. but they all do. Once they damage your tip the least bit, it will start to fray your line in a hurry, and you wont understand why you keep breaking off until you closely inspect your rod tip. Rod guides are getting better, but unless they have metal inserts, Fire Line will eventually eat them up if you are catching heavy fish.

I like power pro by far. It cast great both spinning and baitcasting, it doesnt eat up your guides under heavy load(big fish that take drag), it is knot friendly comparing to other super lines, and it is very limp which is an advantage most of the time. When it is new out of the box, its a little more stiff. The die is what makes it stiff, and is also the *dust* the other guy was talking about. 1 fishing trip and the excess die comes off and the line will be at its prime.

I use power pro on several rods.. anything from 10#-80# test.. one of my rods will be getting spooled with 100# later today.

Casting a jig, drifting rigs, or trolling.. its great all around line and it last a long time. I usually have to respool mono every week in the conditions I fish, power pro has no problem lasting a season… and I fish at least 5 days/week on the average.

You will love the SpiderWire Stealth, it prevents digging into the reel, and when you reel in a fish, the next cast is just fine and it does what it says. Like Lil Ripper said, I like the 10lb for spinning gear cuz it is actually 2lb diameter, I use this for my plastics for bass. I use 12-20lb stealth for other bass aplications. It is just great line, nothing negative to say at all, I love it for both casting and spinning, never get backlashes with casting rods with this stuff. Good luck

While fireline does fray and fade I have never found it to loose strength because of this, I cast mostly with fireline and would be willing to try power pro if anyone has used it in casting applications, fireline is limp and very castable once it breaks in, also a trick I use with the expense for purchasing super line, I will take it off and reverse it on my real, that way I get two seasons out of the same line…

I was just at Gander and they don’t carry 10# Stealth, they had 8 and 15, anyone know where I could find it in 10?

I like PP on my baitcasters and have found it very easy to cast with.
