I have a 2002 yamaha 70hp 2 stroke outboard on a 2003 pro Angler 16. I would like to get a bit more speed out of her. I was thinking about just put new jets in it to make it the same as a 90hp. The other thought I had was to put a new prop on it and leave the jets alone. Or do both! Which would everyone do without sacrificing the slow troll speed??????????? Any help would be great! Thanks everyone!!

My advice would be to leave it alone! Don’t mess with the Carbs or Exhaust ports. If you made that change you would have serious warranty problems. Even if the warranty is not an issue, the new EPA laws prevent modifying the emission systems on new outboards. You may never legally sell the motor if you make those changes…..Not to mention, a licensed dealer may not legally work on it if you need service!

Make sure you do the research. Mods these days are only allowed for racing.

hi fishhunter, After I read your post I was going to suggest that you talk with a Yam dealer mechanic whom you trust for the best ideas, but after I read JonJ’s answer I’m going to have to side with his excellent answer. Warranty and legally should be the main concerns, If you actually were able to make changes the differences and changes to performance would actually be minumal, and you still would not be happy with it. Hey Fishhunter – I’ve got a 1990 70 hp Yamaha that has always run like a dream. Starts a little hard early in the morning but once she runs for 5 minutes she is good to go the rest of the day. I really love my 70 Yamaha. I can get 30 mph on my 17′ Alumacraft and that is all the faster I need to go. I have two requirements for an outboard motor: #1. Start every time I turn the key. #2. Run well enough to get me from point A to point B. Speed is not one of my requirements. I am an old retired fart now and I’m not in much of a hurry about anything. I think you may be overreacting to your need for speed. My recommendation would be to leave your motor alone. If you need more speed I would recommend you get more horsepower.
