I just bought the new navionics hotmap and would like to view/study it on the computer. Is this possible? Thanks.

You cannot read the card on your computer. Its important to know that attempting to open the files via MMC card reader through a USB can and will delete the files on the chip. Hopefully navionics will offer software soon similar to lakemaster’s. I lake master sotware just because I like to see them on the PC. But I also have their MN chip. But the 2006 Nav. card has so many lakes on it. Its too bad they don’t sell the software and chip in a package yet. Lake master is currently trying to figure the safest way for them to make the card readable as to make sure its not able to be copied. Hopefully the boys in Little falls will have it ready for 2007. Thats electronics for ya.

Matt’s right. You have to be careful. They (navionics) do warn against it. Navionics will be releasing the NavPlanner soon, which is exactly what you’re looking for. We hope to have it available in March or April. It will allow you to view the maps on the PC and even be able to do waypoint planning and more. I will announce it’s release here when the time comes.

Bill, I believe the price will be $129 for the NavPlanner which looks like it will include the software and the map card reader. Here’s the info:

    Navionics NavPlanner

It says it is available but it isn’t yet. I spoke to them today.

I’m a little distraught that I paid good money for the data but can’t make a backup copy. I know where they’re coming from, but is that legal? If I own the info, can’t I duplicate it?

My thinking is that they own the info and you paid for the physical chip and the right to USE the info on the chip but not to copy it. If people were to copy it and give it to their friends they would lose tons of sales and go out of business.
    Thanks, Bill

I am guessing it’s legal, but I understand your concern. I also understand their concern. If people could copy these maps… Well, we know what would happen.

My experience with Navionics has been very positive. If something happened to your data and you had a legitimate issue, I think you’d be able to get it resolved. I would assume the same at Lakemaster.

I know exactly what would happen!
I told my buddy the other day that it’s the most expensive piece of fishing equipment (on a $/lb basis) that I’ve ever purchased. Basically a $150 potato chip that could be blown away in a gust of wind. Maybe I need to attach a float to it… Just wish I could back it up.

I hear ya. I pretty much keep mine in the GPS at all times. It’s hard to lose that way!
