Time to buy a new pair of sunglasses for the boat. Any suggestions? My brother swears by his Maui Jim’s, but does a guy need to drop two Franklin’s to get a good pair? I read that amber lenses are the way to go.

Any thoughts on styles, brands, lens composition and color?

Go with the Maui Jim’s. You won’t be disappointed. I have the Ho’okipia(sp?) and love them. I wear mine in & out of the boat. Very lightweight & comfortable. You only have 2 eyes, you better protect them.

Maui Jims are great shades- the price tag does hurt..- costa del mars, are great as well and easier on the wallet…check them out at ebay- lots of good deals!

To me, the most important thing is a quality lens, and many companies fit the bill. I have a pair of Maui Jims, a pair of Costa Del Mars, and a pair of Oakleys. All are quality lenses, but I use the Costas almost exculsively for fishing for one reason, the lens color. For my eyes, copper (or vermillion as Costa calls it, just sees through the water and enhances green (veg) better than the others I have tried. Many lens colors enhance contrast (copper, amber, rose, bronze, yellow, certain greens), but for fishing, I have found the copper/vermillion colors to be the best.

I really like the lenses in kaenon sunglasses, but couldn’t find any that fit my head reall well. Plus, they were quite $$$$.

I have been using Costa Del Mar’s for more than 5 years and I have been very happy with them. I have the Fathom Wave 580, retail $249. If you want to save some money buy the Wave 400 CR-39 Vermillion. They work very well and are lighter. I do suggest getting the Wave 580 technology as, IMHO, are the best sunglasses on the planet. Good luck on your search and remember we only have one set of eyes. TAKE CARE of them 690reece

I have a pair of Kaenon Kore glasses…they are REALLY nice and come in different sizes and lens colors. The Kaenon Web site has some good info on the lens colors. I bought mine from tacklewarehouse.com for $180 and that site has free shipping for orders over $50. Plus no sales tax!

I swear by Smith. Been using them for years and their replacement policy is second to none.

I think I bought the medium size and got the medium gray lenses. I’ve always read that the amber lenses are better on cloudy days. Because I would rather fish in cloudy conditions, it is always sunny when I fish, so I bought gray. Ha ha.

The Kores are very light and don’t hurt my ears when I wear them all day. Nice glasses.

I have four pairs of Costa Del Mars, I like them. Last year in Florida I forget to pack them so I went to Bass Pro and bought a pair of Solar Bats. Now I wear them all the time. Mossback color is the best that I have found for sight fishing. Solar bats are very easy on the wallet starting at 70 dollars.

Costa Del Mar – scratch resistant lens takes the abuse that lying around the boat can dish out……..

I am curious as to what perscription lense folks do as well. My perscription is so bad, I cannot buy sunglasses that “wrap around” for maximum protection.

I also have a pair of Maui Jims, best shades I’ve had. Only bad thing about owning a pair, is that every other pair now stinks. No more cheap shades once you get used to the Jims.

I like the glasses from Hobie. I think they are as good as any of the others mentioned. I’m hard on glasses (as we all are) and these have held up the best of any brands that I have owned. I believe they are about $80 per pair.
