Rod Locker Help

    Looking for a few tips.
    I have a ’93 Lowe 1710 Backtroller.
The boat has a rod locker on the side.
Inside the locker is a holder for only 3 rods, similar to a gun rack.
The problem is, the locker would hold more rods if there was a different way to secure them.
So if I remove the rod holder, does anyone know of something better to install. I’ve heard somewhere of using PVC pipe.
Have 2 kids that like to fish and more rod storage would be a plus.
My thought is a new boat, but wife disagrees (for now).

I just let my rods lay ontop of eachother. Have not had one break from that yet.

Take the holder out and get yourself some of these. You can stack a lot of rods in the locker then.

Rodsocks are great options. If you really wanna go cheap, go the the plumbing section at Home Depot and get some foam pipe wraps. They go like $2-3 each. I’ve got 20 of ’em in my rod locker. They work just fine.

    1)Get a piece of 2″ thick styrofoam.
2)Make a template of your rod box using cardboard
    3) cut out a piece of the styrofoam using the cardboard template.
4)Go to walmart/kmart/golf discount and buy some of the plastic tubes they use to hold golf clubs separate in a golf bag and buy as many as you will need.
    5) Next use the end of the “golf club tubes” and draw circles on the syrofoam where you want holes.
    6)Cut out the holes
    7) Put the styrofoam piece into your rod box- it should be a snug fit and stick the “club tubes” through each hole
    8) stick your rods in there.

Or just do what the above guys said- buy a rod sleeve and leave them in there.

I did the same thing bassbaron is talking about, but instead of styrofoam I used a cutting board with the golf bag sleeves. I used a hole saw to make the holes in the cutting board and then used electrical tape if the golf sleeves didn’t fit tight enough.

then I took a second cutting board and drilled holes in it for the rod handles, works great

That is a slick idea. May have to do a little modifying when the weather warms up a bit

Do you leave the rods in for road time as well?? I would think they would want to slide forward and the butts would fall out. Is this not a concern, Cause that might just be this weekends project

    Thanks for all the tips.
Had sort of an idea on using tubes, but wasn’t sure on how to secure the tubes. Cutting board would solve that.
As far as using the rod socks, that idea never occurred to me.
I think I will go with the socks. The plan is to keep the boat for the first part of the fishing season and maybe upgrade this fall or spring of ’07.

    Thanks again !

Farmboy, I do leave them in the locker while trailering down the road, I have never had one slide out yet. I think the cutting board has enough grip on the cork handles that doesn’t allow them to slide.
