PVC Rod Racks.

The last couple of weeks have left me with a little extra time on my hands. I have had this idea of making a rod rack for a while and finally put this prototype together. Instead of paying around $100 for a nice wood rack from Cabela’s, I made this one for $28. It holds 52 rods no problem. I really didn’t need the fancy one, was hoping Santa Claus would bring one, but no luck there LOL! Anyway, this one is perfect for my garage and holds every rod I own.

It is constructed from 2 inch PVC tubing corner and end cap parts. Sorry, I’m not a plumber, so I’m not sure of the exact terminology for the corner and leg pieces. All parts were readily available at Menards. The holes were drilled out using 1 ½ and 1 ¾ hole saws. I glued everything together using PVC glue. The rod rack is just about 6 feet long and 18 inches wide. As you can see, I did not take a lot of time worrying about hole spacing. Just punched out the two different hole sizes in a random pattern.

My next one will probably be about 3 ½ to 4 feet long and hold 20-25 rods. I’m also thinking a 4-sided square or a triangle shape for a corner….??? I’m also planning to put together something for inside the boat.

The next rod holder is one I made for ice fishing. This one is made out of one inch PVC. I made the base big enough so that it could never fall through the hole!, even a 10 incher! Works great and I made 5 for about $20.

So, if you can’t get out on the water this weekend maybe one of these projects can keep ya busy! If anyone has questions, please post.

Thanks for posting your ideas, they both look like they work great. In the garage some of my rods end up hanging on hooks or in a pile in the corner, this should be a better way to store them and a space saver. Thanks

    hi Jonj,
good projects and some good ideas. does look like you have had too much time on your hands. I’d have to think of something similar for indoors, I’d be afraid of keeping good fishing gear in the garage for very long. thanks for the good ideas. Jack..

PFLUGGY, thats a good idea for the ice rods when out of season.
I have devoted an entire room to my fishing gear and space is a premium.
    Jon,

Whats your thoughts on a minature version of the 52 count holder for ice rods. Whilw looking for the plumbing pieces, did you find any small elbows, etc….?
The ice rods do not have the length of butt that the open water rods do, any thoughts on a modified version of the big boy rack for ice rods?

Thanks for sharing, you do have way too much time on your hands!!

    I like the ideas here!

Like they say, necessity is the mother of invention! All of my ice rods/reels fit into a 5-gallon bucket! lol. So I hadn’t even given it a thought. I’m now sitting here with a new idea in my head. I’ll make something up. How many ice rods do you need this rack to hold?

Along with that, I’m planning on a holder that can be used for fishing from shore. Possibly hold 2-3 rods. No more looking for that perfect “Y” shaped stick.

No patents by the way…. You all are free to use these designs.

    Jon,

The ice rod rack has me intrigued a little. I would be looking for a ice rod holder to accomodate about 45-50 rods or so.
How about a vertical rack meaning a vertical “hat rack”. One vertical PVC tube with holes drilled in the sides on all sides of the tube and you just insert the butts into the holes. They may be more space efficient for floor space for me. But I suppose that a 360 degree hanging capability would be bulky as well? Not sure. What do you think?

being i am in hvac [heating & cooling] i showed it to the guy i work with on our lunch hr. ….oops 1/2 hr. just incase, maybe 1 1/2” with short way 90 pvc would work. we also came up with 90 degree one for a wall corner, it would only be one pipe not two, but stands tight against the wall.man this is almost as much fun as fishin…..i said almost!

    Steve,

IT sounds like I have a real problem here. Glad you are here to help me out with my problem!
Maybe, I should just send you all of them and I would be free of problems!!

I have been doing the 5 gallon buckets for too long for storage and its time to upgrade to a rod rack!
    Definately some good ideas here.
