My understanding is that Evinrude is planning on phasing out all 4 strokes and going completely to their E-tec technology as soon as possible.
Johnson will still have a 9.9 and 15 and 90 and 115 in the 2-stroke models. The motors that are too costly to meet the new EPA standards will be dropped in the Johnson 2- strokes. The 2007 model year should see some new additions to the E-TEC model line as James said.
Thanks, Bill
The buzz going around is that by next year there will be a 9.9hp, 15hp, 25hp, 30hp E-TEC.
so what dose that mean to us suzuki owners ?
parts ,shops that will do work? if my 90 keeps up the good work i will not need a shop to do work, but there is always that operator error thing that happens.
I wouldn’t be too worried about your Suzuki engines, they continue to be sold, have great ratings and will continue to be supported by the Suzuki dealers.
I have a 2004 140hp Johnson 4 stroke – I just hope they have an agreement to supply parts for it. Even if they don’t, I think the engines are identical anyway and you can bolt on any Suzuki part. Might look funny if I lose a lower unit (knock on wood), but you can always use paint I guess.
Yes, BRP is perfecting the smaller ETEC’s and should be out in ’07. You may see a few on the water in late ’06. I had a post up a while back about Johnson going away.
Suzuki is supported by Maplewood Marine, and Dan’s Southside Marine just to name a couple. Johnson and Suzuki have agreed to supply parts under the BRP banner for the forseeable future.
It sounds like we will have an ETEC kicker motor middle of 2006 early 2007. That is the one a lot of us are waiting for
would a 9.9 kicker be oil injected or would you need a separate tank?
Phew….me and my 2004 115 HP johnson 4s just took a big sigh of relief.

a 9.9 four stroke burns “straight” gas like a big 4 stroke and can be plumbed into the same tank supplying the big motor.
Sorry my question wasn’t clear. Someone above mentioned that they would be coming out with a 9.9 e-tec. What I really wanted to know is if a 9.9 e-tec would be oil injected so that you could run an oil line directly from your big motor oil reservoir to the kicker? I may be mistaken but I don’t recall anyone making a small two-stroke in the past that was oil injected, only pre-mixed models. So if you had a two-stroke kicker you needed to run it from a separate pre-mix tank.
Oh, sorry about that. I did mis-read.
If the motor is an E-Tec, it would be oil injected. Since this motor has not yet been released we are speculating here a little but I think it safe enough to say that any E-Tec they come out with will have its own oil reserve on the motor itself which will likely allow an angler to run this motor off of the main tank of “straight” gas.
I heard a rumor from that Johnson is coming out with a new line of 2-stroke motors that will be carburated and exceed the emissions standards.
I have not heard of that one but there are the E-TEC motors by Evinrude [same outboard motor owner company] that makes two stroke motors with better controlls and speed and weigh less than four strokes. They will be keeping a few of the two stroke motors that will be changed some to meet the new controlls though. I believe it is the 9.9 and 15 hp along with the 90 and 115 hp which might be what you heard is referring too.
Thanks, Bill
I happen to be getting a late start yesterday and was flipping stations and ended up seeing a 30 infomercial by BRP Evinrude pushing there new E-Tech engines. There take is that as we know a 2 stroke doesn’t need oil changes, and there E-tech has fewer parts and less maintenance … etc. They also claim to be more fuel efficent than 4 strokes. Sounded real tempting.
You can watch the infomercial at http://www.evinrude.com/
