Received my Copilot today, still not on the motor but will be tomorrow. Here are a couple pictures showing relative size of the control. I am a little sceptical that it will be too small to use with gloves. The first picture attached shows the control sitting on top of a soda can.

Picture of the parts in the box. The side plate gets replaced, there are 3 brackets for the control that mount to a fishing rod (or anything else with some ingenuity) plus the remote control. Minnkota is offering a $4.95 S/H cost only coupon in the package for another control unit free. This is a $40 control if bought retail. I’ll let you know how it goes on and how it works as soon as I can get to the river.

thanks for the heads up…… does look like a tough one for gloves….. can you switch back to the foot control with any ease… or is it pretty much one or the other?
if these work decent Im SURE I will have one soon….

From what I see, the foot control still plugs into the one socket so you can control it either way. There is a list of features in the instruction manual and it specifically states it can be used in conjunction witht he foot pedal. Up to 10 remotes can be used interchangably with one copilot. Instructions say the remote provides finer steering adjustments than the foot pedal. The electronics under the side cover are potted (sealed) and are deemed environmentally sealed against rain, wind or snow. The battery in the remote unit is a single, round, style like used in some calculators…PN CR2032. Minnkota’s claim is the battery should last about 2 fishing seasons, whatever that means. I am betting it might be less than that for some of us but time will tell.

Is there some way to set the frequency for the control? If not how do you prevent folks from other boats controlling your motor? Would be a nice way to get that guy out of my favorite spot next time out :-).

I can see a “You Gotta See This!” out-take from a scene up at the Red wing dam once these things get popular. Everbody controling every else’s trolling motor. I’m sure MinnKota thought of a way to deal with this…

There is a “learn” button on the side of the CoPilot body (the long side that replaces one from your existing motor). There are apparently a bunch of unique IDs for these Copilot receivers and a transmitter needs to be programmed to the specific code of that receiver. The receiver is capable of handling up to 10 transmitters per the instructions. I have no idea on the range of a transmitter but doubt it is very far, meaning not a quarter mile or even 50 yards, more like what we have on our car keys that unlocks the doors, maybe 15 yards? I’ll test it out and report back as soon as I have it assembled.
