GPS and Fish finder

I have a Garmin 250C and 172c at the console. I have read that the units can communicate. If that is true how does it work? Do I need a black box or just wire them together? what information do they share. Does anyone ahve this set up. and if so what do you find it useful for? I have not hooked the 250c up yet but the 172c is already set at the console. I would like the a gps at the trolling motor. Is there anyway my gps can talk to my fishfinder at the trolling motor? The problem I have is that I can’t see the gps from the trolling motor so I can’t see the spots I have marked on the gps. Any ideas?

Most Garmin units are compatible with the GSD 20 sonar box now. I have two Garmin units on my boat and 2010C and a 172C. I use the same sonar to run both (GSD 20) The GSD 20 is wired to each unit and provides the sonar portion to each unit.

I do not believe you can share GPS info…but I could be wrong.

It says something in the manual that the 250c can share info with your gps. I am not sure what info and how.

It may have changed but if wired together you could mark waypoints on the GPS by using the locator. Call Garmin at 1-800-800-1020- and they will tell you what wires need to be hooked up.

The 250C can be wired to a GPS so that it can act as a simple GPS (no mapping but it can mark waypoints and plot a trail). It’s all in the manual.

I will re-read the manual but would this mean that if wired together, a waypoint in my gps at the console could show up on my 250C at the trolling motor?

No, I don’t believe so. My understanding is that a waypoint on your combo unit will NOT show up on the 250C.
