I bought two this spring. Bass Pro had a good deal on them. I gave one to my dad and kept the other. We haven’t put a lot of hours or abuse on them but so far we like them very well. They seem like a well built reel that’s made in Japan. I bought them because they have a flippin’ switch. We primarily use them for trolling three-way rigs or Dubuque rigs. I like how these reels instantly engage when you release the thumb bar.

I don’t think Shimano makes a reel with a flippin switch.

I have two and love them. I am having trouble with one that when the flipping swtich is on, it hangs up. Going to have it worked on this winter. Might need a good cleaning.

Cabelas has a deal for a rod and one of these reels for $74.99. Doesn’t sound too bad.

I like Quantum products. My fishing partner convinced my wife to buy me a Curado SF for my birthday, I am planning on giving it to him next spring.

I have used the Ti600, Accurist 500, 640PT, and the Bass Pro Shops – Kevin Van Dam series. Of these, I like the Kevin Van Dam series best. Not because it has a KVD signature on it, but because they cost less than both the 500 and 640 and because of the extra bearing it has over the 500. For overall performance the 640 is very sweet but comes with a big price tag. I am going to get 2 640 PT’s if they go on sale for $70 at Cabelas again.

I agree with Alvinmack, the only casting reels I use are Shimano Curado or Curado sf (super free). I will never buy a Quantum reel again in my lifetime. I have had 2 and they have slipped when I set the hook on 2 very nice bass, causing me to lose the fish, (I even had the drag tightened all the way). You get what you pay for, and the Curado’s are around the $120 and $150 for the super free model I believe, and worth every dollar more than the Accurist in my mind. They cast flawlessly and have never had any problems of any kind. My buddies I fish with, guides I have fished with and many a bass fisherman are known to use these reels because of their value and quality. For spinning reels I use shimano or Okuma brand spinning reels. The Okuma brand gives you 10 ball bearings for a pretty decent price, and they operate flawlessly, I found out about them at web page , a pretty cool website from a trophy bass hunter in California. Check out some of the pics in his gallery of 15-22lb bass, yes that is not a type-o, 20 pound bass and all he uses is Okuma spinning reels. One of his buddies who is known as “Swimbait” only uses Curado casting reels. This website is pretty cool. Just my $0.02 worth.

That is interesting, one of the reasons I want to get rid of the Curado SF is because the drag cannot get tight enough…

    SteveO,

In all due respect to Quantum and in your case the curado, If you use braid like I do (spider wire Stealth) I guess you are supposed to spool up with a little monofilament and then tie on and fill the rest with the braid. I don’t think I was doing that before, not 100% sure anyway, but I guess this is what can happen if you don’t, the slipping we are talking about. I guess it’s like cars, we all know someone who loves certain ones, and others who hate em. I think the curado in the regular model is awesome, I probably won’t even buy the superfree again, (I have one of each), just because I like the regular so much. I will stick to my curado’s no doubt, you will probably get the accurist and love it just as well. Good luck.

Sorry, I meant to reply to fishingscout, not SteveO. It looks like you are getting rid of all of your best stuff, other than the curado, your boat is up for robbery I saw in the boat classifieds. Man I wish I could take that off your hands. Someone should take it and wait till boat show time and pocket the difference huh? Sweet, sweet boat though. Are you upgrading from that?1? Why are you selling? Take care.

Upgrading… I guess. I am going to buy a Ranger Z next year. I like my Triton a lot but I don’t like the limited choices of dealers to work with.

I think we are on the same page about the reels. All the top reels are great, it mostly comes down to what each person is use to using and good/bad experiences with them.

I am a big fan of the Quantum Accurist. I use it for both vertical jigging and trolling harnesses. The flippin switch is a gotta have for me. They also have a lefty model (another gotta have for me). They did an upgrade for 05. I’ll be buying another one soon.

I have several Curados SF and Accurists. They are both fine reels but I do prefer the Quantum reel. It just cast smoother and farther for me. The only complaint I have on Quantum is the finish. Much of it wears off in the first year but I guess it doesn’t hamper performance. I guess I should ge one of those bags to put over them.

I just recieved the reel yesterday. Quite impressesd with it’s looks. It was married up with a 6’6″ IM8 med/hvy Quantum rod. I priced these out at G.M and Dick’s and they both had the reels alone listed @$79.99. I paid $74.99 rod included. I’ll post on performance when I get back from Mexico. The LM bass down there should be a good test.

You have to be back from Mexico by now, I am looking at the reels as well and Cabela’s still has that deal, getting the rod for free, still feel the same, AC500CX is still a good deal?
