St.Croix added a 5-foot 6-inch medium-action spinning rod(#AS56MF) to their Avid Series. Using a shorter rod while vertical jigging puts you closer to the action , there might be an advantage to this (having better control) vrs. the longer rods. The rod features high-modulus graphite that is strong and durable, yet ultralight and super sensitive. It’s equipped with Fuji’s Alconite Concept guide system, an ergonomically designed cork handle, and a skeletal-cork handle real seat. Check out all the St. Croix rods out at http://www.stcroixrods.com. May your net be heavy

Thanks for sharing Dave. You can’t beat their rods in my opinion for sensitivity, quality and features. I really love the St. Croixs I have been fishing with this year. They are much better than even the older St. Croix rods, alot more sensitive and I am able to control and not lose fish with these new ones. I’m sold 100%. And yes, like their slogan says: “May your net be heavy”.

    Bill,
What would you recommend for jigging and rigging rods?

    Hey Don,

The new rod sounds like an excellent jiggin rod. I prefer the Avid 6’3″ med extra fast. The rod loads up super fast on hook sets, yet offers the sensitivity I like when using light jigs. I really like the Avid 7’6″ med light extra fast for a rigging rod, especially when I’m running lindy’s. Of course this rod doesn’t work well in the river environment where, typically, you are using a lot more weight. I prefer the Avid 7′ med heavy for my river applications where a 3 or 4 ounce weight is required. This amount of weight works this rod pretty good though.

If you want an all around rod that will perform under many applications though, the Avid 6’8″ med extra fast is a great rod to cover your bases for many applications.

These are just my opinions though.

Thanks for your input. I will need to replace my favorite jig rods soon so I will check out your recommendations.

Hey Don, I have the St. Croix Avid rods for jigging and casting. Both are 6ft. long with a fast tip. One is a med. and one is a med. light. For trolling I have the baitcaster St. Croix Premier rods. 2- 7ft. med. heavy, 2-7ft. med. and 2-7ft.med.- light. I plan on someday getting a couple 10-1/2 ft. rods that DeeZee gave a product review awhile back ago. They should also work great for 3-ways and also cranks on boards. Bill
