I am looking to purchase a 1993 40hp Evinrude tiller. The
question I have is,”are these motors with the VRO injection
system a reliable motor?” I’ve heard pros and cons on this
subject. Is it a smooth running motor? will it troll down
to a slow speed? Is it a good back trolling motor? I know it’s a lot of questions any input would be a big help!

You can convert this easy to run 50:1 mixture if you dont like the injection, but I doubt you will dislike it. I think it is a nice motor, you should be able to troll down to 1.5 or so easily. My .02!

I have a 1991 sixty evinrude tiller. I have replaced the VRO one time back about 1994. After that I switched over to synethetic oils and never had a lick of problem since. I am not sure if the 40 is a looper engine ( Combution chamber design )The loopers were never known to be really good trolling engines. I run seafoam in mine at all times and it will troll just about all day with out loading up. It does not troll real smooth like the new engines but it gets the job done. On my 16.5 lund it trolls down to 1.6 GPS with the engine kicked up with the power trim. That is something that really helps is when trolling tip the motor forward some. Other wise what can really cause a problem at idle is gas wants to pool in the bottom of the carbs this way it runs out instead of into the engine.
