Most people just clip the wire to the pump and mix the gas & oil at 50/1. Problem solved.

I bought an ’84 40 hp Evinrude brand new and the first three times I took it out it behaved just like yours. After the third time I had to take it back I told the dealer to keep it til he got it fixed. That was in November. I didn’t hear anything from him til March. He told me to come pick up my boat. When I got there, there was a brand new ’85 50hp on the back of it. He told me that the 40’s didn’t produce a strong enough vacuum to properly operate the VRO pump.

After about 6 years the 50hp started doing the same thing. I now have a Mercury on my boat.

A fellow I took the Evy to said that you’re better off to disconnect the VRO and mix your gas. Good Luck

Actually, here is a more detailed approach to the problem from an old issue of Bass and Walleye Boats magazine.

“Remove the oil line at the pump fitting and cap it off to keep contaminates out. Disconnect the 4 wire connector that comes from the oil tank. Tape these off to seal the connections. Make sure the fuel in the tank is mixed 50:1 with oil and run the engine before disconnecting everything.”

    -or just clip the wire….
