Yamaha jet drives?

Yes, some of us run cousins of that only bigger and of course better…four wheel drive for the river.

August 5, 2005 at 2:12 am #376658My 18 ft. Seaark which is pretty heavy, probably 1200 lbs. does about 36 mph, but can run all day in 3″ of water. speed is not an outboard jet’s forte, but they free up the interior vs. an inboard jet drive, and make more sense in smaller boats. My dad has a 14 ft. lund with a 25/20 jet my brother has a 16 ft. roughneck with a 90/65 and me with my ‘ark with a 150/105. That yamaha is a 115 powerhead for an 80 hp rating at the impeller.

August 5, 2005 at 2:19 am #376660It would be intersting to take a ride in one of these. I have never seen them before today except for like you said JC mounted inboard style. No worries of dinging a prop and the ability of cruisin’ through shallow water.
Whats the difference in noise as compared to a prop motor?August 5, 2005 at 2:23 am #376661I’m a gearhead I love loud everything, and it’s fairly loud but a screamin V6 is music to my ears…some people may be put off.

Don HansonPosts: 2073August 5, 2005 at 1:50 pm #376737I run a 40hp Yammie jet. Give me a holler if you want to take a ride.
August 5, 2005 at 10:49 pm #376807How do they compare to prop drives when it comes to fuel comsumption and price.
WarrenMNAugust 6, 2005 at 2:42 pm #376865I bought my motor online and had it delivered for like $7300.00 dollars, then I ordered a jet drive for like $1750.00. did the conversion myself and sold the gearcase on e-bay for $1400.00. so my grand total was like $7650.00…which I thought was a pretty good deal for an 04 150 hp. As far as fuel consumption goes…my motors pretty powerful and I can throttle back to about 4000 rpm and cruise at about 30 mph, so it’s not that bad. Some guys don’t max out the horsepower rating and have to run full throttle all the time, then they suck some fuel.
August 9, 2005 at 2:02 pm #377236What do you do to reverse those things if you have to back up.
WarrenMNDon HansonPosts: 2073August 9, 2005 at 6:59 pm #377323The jets have a shift lever the same as a prop job. The difference being the shift cable (photo #1) is attached to, what is called a reverse gate.
Don HansonPosts: 2073Don HansonPosts: 2073Don HansonPosts: 2073August 9, 2005 at 9:46 pm #377398Ah, a deflector like a jet engine braking system. I could picture with my mapping getting into a tight spot and no way to back up.
WarrenMNAugust 10, 2005 at 8:45 pm #377608Don,
What kind of water can you run in with the Yammie Jet?
How applicable would it be to have a hydraulic jackplate for the outboard (granted you can keep your water pressure up) to raise the motor up even further while you are up on plane?
Based on what I have seen in the past is the Yammie jet drive lower units hang below the bottom of the boat by 10 inches or more? I cannot remember for sure, so I could be way off.THanks
Don HansonPosts: 2073August 10, 2005 at 9:17 pm #377620Steve, the lower plate of the jet sits even with the bottom of the boat. It would be the same location as a cavition plate on a prop motor. In my experience, if the boat makes it through a shallow area without bottoming out the motor will make it also. If it get less than a foot deep I have my concerns. On plane it may be fine but I am running areas with rocks so I am a little on the cautious side.
August 11, 2005 at 1:02 am #377654Or you could have a tunnel hull like mine and have nothing below the hull. Mine is a specific “jet” tunnel only about 2.5 inches deep just enough to raise the foot above the bottom of the hull. I have taken my boat anywhere there is water (minus weeds) I’ve jumped snags…blasted through short stretches of damp sand, and traversed scary whitewater…which was the most fun. There are few places cats can go that I can’t follow.

August 11, 2005 at 1:20 pm #377420Cool Guys, That is awesome!
I need one these rigs badly.
I have had enough of pushing my prop jon boat over the shallow riffle areas.Jet Cat,
Do you have any pics of the lower pump assembly?August 11, 2005 at 7:09 pm #377749Here’s the best I have for now, I’ll try and get some specific pump pictures as well as all three boats.
