I’ve just bought a pair of 8’6″ Pinnacle/Silstar trolling rods. Now I need to decide on line counter reels. I have a pair of Penn 209’s for leadcore. I’d appreciate the group’s input.

I like the Daiwa Sea Lines. Some say the scheels reels are similar.
I’m with Tuck……..been there done that. Go with the Diawa SG17LCA or the 27’s. They will treat you right
I have Okumas and they are terrible. When you find yourself trying to compensate for the reels problems, you are better off counting your own line. They have been terrible. With that said, does anybody want to buy some Okumas?
I am surprised by the negative comments on Okumas. We have sold the line counters for years and never had a single problem. Have heard many compliments on them.
Good Fishing,
Mike
I have the Okuma brand linecounter reels [4] and like them very well. Have had no problems with the ones I have. I also have at least 15 of their spinning reels and like them very much too.
Thanks, Bill
I also have two Okuma,s I bought here on one of the auctions we used to have. and they have worked just fine for me.never a problem
If you buy Okumas make sure they are the Convectors. The Magnas are not reliable or repeatable. My two Convectors are OK, but not as good as my Diawa sealine 27 counters.
Remember that Diawa builds a cheap version too and I believe these are called accu-depth, which are not too good and built cheaper.
I’ve logged a ton of hours with my Okuma Magdas for both muskies and walleyes. I’ve never had a problem with the counters (although I’ve heard you can’t cast the line and expect them to count) and so long as you keep an eye on the drag you won’t have a problem. I like ’em.

I’ve used both Okuma Magda reels and Daiwa Accu Depth reels, with similar results. Both are economy priced reels and perform as such. I guess it all boils down to how much you want to spend and how much you use them. I cannot comment on the more expensive reels, as I have not used them. I do have some Shakespeare line counters, which are virtually identical to the Gander Mt. guide series reels, and many other store brands. They perform similar to the Okuma Magdas.
My .02 worth. Ya get what ya pay for!
i started out with the daiwa accu-depth 27’s. i had nothing but trouble with them from the anti-reverse not working to the spool not going into freespool without rolling the spool back and forth and switching the freespool switch in and out. i took them back to gander to replace them and the guy that was helping me couldn’t get the line to spool correctly on a set of new ones. the level wind was not running right, kept loading the line all on one side. i decided to step up to the sealine 27’s. i haven’t tried them out yet, maybe later this week. when i do, i will post my findings. with the muskie season starting to heat up, the walleye fishing is on hold for a while…..tom f
BTW…. gander took care of me and replaced everything without a hassel, there was a up-charge on the sealine’s, witch i expected to pay, that was $40 a reel.
I got the Cabelas Left hand line counter this spring. Only LH linecounter I know of. Very smooth drag and very sound.
