I have a 2003 yamaha 75 4-stroke behind my crestliner fish hawk. Last summer it developed a whining noise that sounded like a belt slipping. Took it to the dealer for repair; they replaced some bushing that was causeing the noise. Well this summer the same noise is back. I took it back to the dealer this morning. Hope they can fix it for good this time. I was wondering if any of you have had similar problems. Its still under warranty but if the problem comes back again; I may be asking for a new motor.———H

Does this happen all the time or only after you have run the motor for a while? I am thinking that it is the thermastat. I have been in a few boats that had the same thing happen, but it was only after the motor was run for a while. If that is what the problem is, It is not a problem, the thermastat is sticking open. I hope that is all it is for you.

It happens warm or cold. Last time the dealer replaced what they refered to as a bushing. The noise comes and goes. Mostly while powering up or backing off———H

I have the same noise with my 2004 F75.

After talking to a service technician, he told me it was the lower unit making the noise. I wasn’t sure about that, it sounded to me like a belt slipping somewhere in the center of the motor.

He explained that using high performance lower unit oil would take care of it.

I do still hear a slight squeal once in a while, but not like it was.

I made sure that it was documented in case it ends up being something more severe down the road.

You kind of hate to leave it like it is, but after 95 hours on it, no problems yet.

Of coarse you don’t, they buy 4stroke parts from Yamaha and paint them black.
