Are you looking for a point and shoot type or a model that accepts interchangeable lenses?

Almost all of the current point and shoot models make no noise when taking pics. All of the name brands have very good models that have most of the capabilities of traditional 35mm SLRs (manual settings, program settings, time exposures, etc.) and have quality lenses with up to 6x optical zoom (digital zoom is available beyond that, but image quality begins to degrade). That is in addition to the digital capabilites. If you want the flexibility of using interchangeable lenses, then you are talking bigger $$$.

Ok thanks much for the advice, interchangable lenses are not a big deal to me.

I took a picture with my Sony Cybershot 4.1 just to see how much noise it made. First it plays a little tune when turned on (leave it alone, Brian). The shutter click is definitely something a deer could hear in a quiet woods so you may just have to go to the store and play with their demonstrators to find a quiet one.

I have a Cybershot and its fairly quiet. Good camera overall. Unless your going to be standing with-in 10 feet of deer you will want a zoom lens. I believe most of the Cybershots allow interchangeable lenses. You can find a good used zoom lens on e-bay or National Camera Exchange. Or buy new for about $150-200..

I use the Canon powershot. It makes no sounds when taking pictures. They have a lot of models to choose from. They have good lenses, have excellent features and accept add-on optics.

This picture was taken at its lowest quality settings.

I’ll second the Canon Powershot. I’ve got one and love it.
Very easy to use, but still has quite a few options if I ever learn how to use them. Also uses just normal batteries instead of expensive, hard to get specialized camera jobs and battery life is decent.

My mom has a powershot, and I’ll second it as being a good camera for general purpose picture taking. I have a Nikon Coolpix and it too is a decent general purpose camera. Both are quiet as long as you remember to turn off the shutter sound in the menu. Good luck finding a camera.
