Swapping a powerhead

Just wondering if any of you have ever changed a power head? I have a 50 horse Johnson that has diddly for compression in one cylinder. The lower is in decent shape so I would like to not have to change the whole motor out if not necessary. Mr. Goodwrench has nothing to worry about with me but I am somewhat handy. Any suggestions or should I get off my cheap butt and find a decent used motor?

Haven’t done it myself, but I have tackled enough of those “I’ll learn as I go jobs” and I would think that this is one to pass on. At the least, look for a good used engine while you repair this one so that you don’t lose a great amount of the season. As I get older, I am starting to put a greater value on my time.

I have found the best source for used engines to be boat/motor/trailer combos that people are selling. Usually the boat is shot, but the engine could be in good shape. As we all know, a lot of boats sit around most of their life and have very little hours on the engine.

    Good luck,
    Dan

Thanks for the input. I didn’t think about looking for a combo deal. Then I could always junk the boat or donate it somewhere. Good thinking. Thanks.

taking your boat in and having the powerhead looked at and tested and possibly changed if you have a decent dealer around you can be pretty cheap also. I got mine done in rochester for 150 dollars on a thirty five horse johnson. hope that helps a little

My Dad had a 50 hp Johnson years ago with the same problem. He took it to a repair shop to have it redone. Didn’t make a whole lot of difference. So he took it back to them to fix it again. The motor never ran right so he got rid of it.
