Mounting VHF radio antenna

    I’m trying to decide where to mount the antenna (3’whip) for my new marine radio. I’ve heard you should have the antenna at least 3′ from the radio. Is this absolutely necessary? I think I want to mount it on the gunnel just in front of the console. I run an 18′ ProV, I’d be interested in hearing where others have mounted their antennas.

    Try the radio out before you mount it. Gunnel or on front of the console in the carpet was good for me…

    Sometimes, if the antenna is not far enough away from the unit, it will reset the unit frequently, and can cause some interference. The standard is 3 feet.
