Prop Help Needed

I have a 2004 140 4-stroke Johnson. It came with an aluminum prop, and I want to upgrade to a stainless steel. I have already ordered 2 stainless steel props and they both don’t fit on the motor This is even when the company I ordered them from told me what I needed. Just wondering if anyone else has this same motor and what type of stainless steel prop you have and diameter and pitch. The aluminum one that came with was the Hustler system and I don’t like it at all, but that said it was a 13 1/4 x 21, so I ordered that and the s.s. one didn’t fit on the shaft. So the company said I needed a 14 1/4x 21, well that one fit, but the hub is too long and I can’t get the nut or cotter key or anything else on. I guess this motor can only have a certain kind of prop on or something. I thought I would check here before calling the dealer. Thanks in advance.

Keep me informed on what you find out. I was told that that motor runs better with an Alum. prop than stainless. That’s what they told me at the dealership.I am however looking to put a prop on with less pitch. What kind of RPM’S are you turning with the 21 pitch? I’m getting between 5200-5400 before she “kicks”out.

Could have, I got mine 2 years ago though. Was it the grey Crestliner or Red Lund? Red Lund is my brother. Do you fish the river much?

    Chappy,
I ended up going on line and finding a new stainless that will work now. I also called the dealer and talked to them and they recommended the same prop, probably because it is what they carry, but I will let you know what I am running when I get it. Should be here on monday. I ordered the 21 pitch in s.s.

From what I understand, you’ll lose RPM’s because the SS prop is heavier. I was told to increase RPM’s, Lower the pitch. And with the heavier (SS) prop, you’ll turn slower. What kind of RPM’s were you turning with the Alum?

Your Johnson is a Suzuki in different plastic. I have a DF115 on a 1850 Crestliner and just went thru the same process you are in trying to find the correct prop. I finally ended up with the Suzukie 14×20 and I’m turning 5800 at 43 mph (?) with full load,(livewells, fuel, gear and 2people) I would have liked to have more rake but it is real hard to find anyone that is knowledgable or will take the time to help you. I really wanted a good hole shot which is what this does provide and am willing to give up a little speed. I can trim up to 50% which was a lot better than the aluminum which only allowed about 35% trim. Your shaft on the Johnson should be 1″ and the 2 stroke are a little smaller. Maybe you can use some of this info to help you narrow down your situation. I did get my prop for $350.00 vs the $429.00 as listed.

Thanks for the advice. I just called Johnson directly yesterday and talked to a technician, not once, but twice. The first guy gave me the wrong part number so after looking at what was close I found what I was looking for I thought and sure enough the next guy I talked to gave me the correct part number and said these motors were tricky in finding a correct prop. For anyone interested the part number was 777026 which is 13 7/8 x 21 stainless. I will let you know how it performs after I get it out on the water.
