I am thinking of rigging my boat up with a planer board/mast system. I have the in lines and like em and all but think I’d like to give the mast/planer boards a try.
    A few questions.
Any of you have a preference as to brands ? How tall a mast ? Floor mounted or one that sits in a seat pedistal mount ?

Thanks for your time and any info.

I just bought the Big Jon dual mast system for my boat. I mounted it directly to the platform/gunnel, where my anchor-mate, trolling motor, and Vexilar sit. The base it self is only about 4″ by 5″, so space really wasn’t an issue. Not knowing what to expect, I backed it underneath the deck with 1″ plywood to keep it rigid. The also make an accessory so the post can be put in a boat seat mount. I think it is a 6 foot mast, it has a stainless finish, and the two reels came spooled with 150# hi-vis dacron. I bought the collapsable dual boards in floresent green, they aren’t the Cannon ones, but have the same construction and were half the price. I only have had one chance to use the set-up, on Mille Lacs for opening weekend pulling cranks. It worked great, the boards tracked really true even in heavy waves. I am in the process of trying some different releases, right now I have the regular adjustable Offshore. But, since I bought the rig primarily for Musky fishing I will be trying the heavy releases this weekend.

    Thanks Dan.

I was looking at the Big Jons or one of the Offshore masts. I am still hoping I can con my buddy into making a set of skis out of some scrap Cedar his brother has. He made himself a set out of the Cedar and they turned out pretty slick. More than likely I’ll end up buying a pair tho. Probably a set of Rivieras.
I won’t be pulling big cranks so will probably be able to get by with the Offshore releases. The new Snap Weight releases ( they have a little tip on the pad ) should be plenty for what I want to do assuming the regular Red releases don’t cut it for me.

I would be interested in hearing how your release experiments go in any event.

    Thanks again
