Bad luck this week pre-fishing for the BFL in Lacrosse. An old oil line broke inside my motor and the repair guy says the power head is fried. It’s a 1990 Mercury XR4. Any suggestions from anyone? Should I buy new or try and rebuild? Or should I try finding another motor like it and buy it used, that way I have lots of extra parts?

Contact Smitty (Richard Smith – FTR Pro-Staff) who recently replaced the head on his Evenrude… he may have a contact person who could save you big $ on replacement used parts. LOL

If you have a 1990 motor that means it was built in ’89. Would you put a new engine in a ’89 car and hope for years more of reliability? I don’t think so.

To put it in perspective, I have a 13 year old daughter, born in ’88, and, geez, do we have memories. That is a long time if you ask me. Think about where you were 13 years ago!!

Your XR4 was a GREAT motor in it’s day but it is time to get a new one!!!

    I agree with the bigdog.

Sorry to hear about your mechanical problems but I certainly would opt out of investing any amount of money back into an older motor. Chances are you’d end up chasing other bugs and fixes around as other parts wear out.

Newer motors are anything but cheap so that makes the descision a tougher one… but I personally would feel much more comfortable going that route. Having warranty coverage is a VERY warm and comfortable feeling.
