If you have read any of my fishing reports you frequently hear me reference the Northland Mimic Minnow. It has become my ‘go to” swim boat for large and smallmouth bass. I think it has the best action of the commercially available baits in its class. It always runs true and tracks straight at all speeds. Many of the other manufacturers bait ten to run off on their side at higher speeds. In a side-by-side comparisons on Lake Michigan last spring the Mimic Minnow out fished the Storm Wild Eye Shad by a substantial margin. My only complaint was the 2 and 2.5” baits they offered didn’t match the size of the shad on the Mississippi River in the fall.
The good news is the added a 3.5” line this spring. The photo is the small, 2” body on a 1/8 oz head, the 2.5” on a ¼ oz head and the new 3.5” on a 3/8 oz head. This lineup should cover period in the spring when the smallies are chasing the small emerald shiners (pin minnows) in the spring, to the 3-4” shad that are the size of choice in the fall.
