Last nite I was going to purchase 3 avid series rods, and the sales person told me he was having trouble getting warranty work done, I know avid has a life time, what does this cover, for $160.00 x3, I need to know St Croix will stand behind their product, for now I put my purchase on hold. One problem he was having was getting ceramic guides, replaced, and St Croix was charging him to repair this….

    please gave input

I’ve never had a single problem. Mail in the rod with $10 for return shipping… 10 days to 2 weeks later I have a new rod. I usually enclose a little note telling them what happened but I’m not sure that’s necessary or helpful.

Opinions may vary but the vast majority of the people you’ll talk to rave about St.Croix warranty service… they have one of the best, if not the best, reputations in the industry.

Or you could have someone build you those rods, make them better than the factory rods, for less, and the builder can use components they will replace if broken. I would still charge a small fee to replace the guides if broken after 30 days – as would most builders I think. However – with all the rods I have built – I have never had a broken guide come back to me – but I always use quality components. (So does St. Croix normally). So I don’t know why the guy would not endorse them. Chuckles

One custom builder that has a “no questions asked – unlimited life-time” warranty would be Hooked On Fishing in Rochester, MN. They ship custom rods for less than factory prices all over the country and will repair or replace any rod they build no matter what happened to it.

I had a tournament partner break the tip of one of my two piece trolling rods off trying to get it in a rod locker. St. Croix sent me the half I needed within a week! At no charge! I don’t know if that was standard procedure, or if I was just lucky! I have stuck with them for all of my rod purchases. I have 3 new Avids on the way right now!

Wow James – they are cheap… I’d have to see one to say any more about that – especially since they are including shipping – they must build alot to get some significant quantity discount on blanks… but they also turn them out factory style with no choice on components etc. at least at that price…

I don’t make enough on the rods I build to offer a warranty like that – but asking for $10 to replace a guide wouldn’t really be asking too much for a process that is going to take paying for a replacement guide, removing the old one, cleaning the blank, preparing the new guides foot, wrapping the guide on the blank – with accent stripe, then coating the thread with color preserver – at least 2 coats if used, then applying two coats of finish and they need 6 hours each on the drying motor – with about 24 hours between color preserver and finish and with 24 hours between each coat of finish. So the process will have to take place over at least three evenings… nope – I wouldn’t feel guilty about charging $10 bucks at all. I don’t think Setter or Supserdave have any complaints about their rods I have built… matter of fact they compliment me here and elsewhere frequently. But every rod I build is a total custom with the decisions all being made by the consumer… Chuckles

I just checked their site and you are indeed correct, the return shipping is now $20. Thanks for pointing out my goof… I didn’t want to give anyone a bum steer.

I broke a 3 year old st croix avid last year in half (between the first guide and the handle) and took it to where i bought it- (K&K in Bettendorf), they sent it in and i had it back in 4 weeks for a total of 8 bucks. Some of that is the service from KK but st croix has never been a problem for me. I have 11 st croix rods- 8 avid, 1 premier, 1 fiberglass crank and one of the new legend tournament. Ive called them for broken tips and received them for free. Never actually broken a guide(knock on wood). I would recommend an avid 100% for quality and service.

Service with St Croix has always been excellent. I even sent them a 10 year old Legend and got a nice credit towards a newer better model. I now have 15 St Croixs, mostly Avids.

I know Mike personally, hes a good friend so I know his secret. He and Mike Fischer, his rod builder employee, go up there and hand pick the St. Croix blanks they want. They buy 100-200 blanks at a time so they get good pricing plus the best of the best St. Croix blanks. And that equals great custom made St. Croix rods at great prices. St. Croix Rods-Gotta love em!
    Thanks, Bill

As for the St. Croix Rod Company/factory I have never had a problem with them for anything. Their service has always been great also.

    Thanks, Bill

I suddenly realized a ceramic insert was gone on one of my Avid casting rods. I called St.Croix, they gave me an RA number and I sent it in. I had it back in a week. They charged me 5 bucks. They have been GREAT to me for many years.

Last fall, about 10 days before a trip to Erie, my Avid reel seat broke. I called St Croix to ask about repair, I was ready to drive to Park Falls if they would fix it. The person I spoke with told me to ship the rod back to them for repairs and they would do their best to get it back to me before my trip. Needless to say2 days later a new rod showed up at my door. It had cost me $8 to ship it to them and they replaced with a new rod at no charge before they even had mine back….that is what I call superb service!
