If the snow and ice ever melt up here I have to build a 16×8 floating dock. The floatation material available in the catalogs seems a bit on the spendy side. Does anyone have any ideas of a less expensive alternative? Thanks

My buddy just redid thier dock. He used an old dock and put all new treated wood on it. He got it done real cheap. If you ask around you should be able to find an old dock with two pontoons on it to redo. Or there is always the 50 gallon drum that floats.

If 50 gallon drums are to big(they might sit to high) you could also go with 35 gallon barrels!

I thought of drums but the lake is located in the superior national forest, and I don’t think the forest service would go for drums. I’ve already decided to go with new treated lumber so that’s why I’m trying to save a little on the floats.

On the Mississippi they allow barrels, but you have to get some that did not contain any toxins (including any oil products). I think they might also have to be plastic. You might check with the DNR about the use of barrels on your water.
