60 hp mariner 1993

I have another question about my motor if you pull the throttle back to fast water forces it’s way back up exhaust and shuts the motor down I read the owners manuale and says not to do that ,But I am barely slowing down and it kills the motor and like my name says i am just starting out so if you can tell me any stories I would thankyou.
