I imagine this has been brought up before (but it’s my first day) Does anyone have experience with the after market line counters. I’d be useing 12# Power-Pro with it. Thanks

    Hi Gunflint!

    Welcome to the IDA!

Are you talking the “Shakespeare” model that you attach to your rod?

I have a couple of these. They work “ok”, but on thin superlines, they have a tendency to “slip”. Mono works great on them.

I have the shakespear counter and it works just fine for me. I use powerpro and its’ either 6 or 8# diameter.

I tried Power Pro 2# diam in one that I snapped onto the rod and it did a pretty poor job (slipped all the time). I finally just put it into the spare bin and bought Daiwa line counter reels, and have had great success with them.

Take the $12.00 it cost to buy them and either flush it down the toilet, or buy a line counter reel. They slip a lot, are inaccurate and get in the way all the time! My two cents worth and spoken from experiance!

    Very true!!!

If you are just a weekend warrior chasing walleyes, you can get away with the cheaper models. They run in the $40 range……

I was afraid of slippage useing superlines. I am hoping to use the counter on a baitcasting set up.

Gary, are you saying that they are all junk, or that the good ones are about $40?

Okuma Magda’s are less than $40.00 and will hold up well to the average fisherman. I have seen them on sale many times for $29.99 in fact.

    Thanks guys,
I wouldn’t be useing it all the time, just for longline trolling deep lakes. Maybe a few time a week.

They just don’t work IMHO, line counter reels are cheap, I’d buy a cheapo Gander Mountain Guide series before I wasted money on another clip on one. The reel a Gander isn’t going to cost you much more, and you can just switch it on and off another rod. That would be my route anyways, line counters rock, when they work.
