You’re fishing walleyes. You get three rods. One for jigging, one for rigging, and one for trolling. You’ve got jigging, pitching, slip bobbering, rigging, trolling & casting cranks, planer boards, 3-ways, etc… and you have to do it all with just 3 rods. What would you choose. Describe your picks. You can name specific brands and models or just describe the rod type, length, and characteristics.

Now I realize it’s impossible to do it all properly with just 3 rods. You may need to sacrifice performance for certain techniques that are less important to you in order to maximize performance for other techniques. Or pick a rod that’s pretty good at several techniques but not stellar in any one particular technique.

    As a side note…
Al Lindner wrote an article on Walleye fishing in the Shimano flyers a while back about having just 3 rods and I think he picked a 6′ MF jigging rod, a 6’6″ MLF rigging rod, and a 7′ MLF or MF trolling rod.

So let’s hear it. What are your choices???

Same size and style as Tom, just use legend Elietes instead of Avids!!! Also wild river for trolling!
    Also just my two cents!

I wish I could start all over again……..

If I had to do it over, I would go:

They would be St. Croix Avid or G-Loomis IMX rods

    1 6’6″ M for jigging/rigging
1 7′ M for pulling cranks and 3-way live bait rigs
1 6’6″ MH for bottom bouncers and 3-way crank rigs

That is really all a person needs.

Am I the only clown who pulls bottom bouncers around here????

I live and die by that method on any rocky waters…….

    Bottom bouncers and cranks
    Bottom bouncers and spinners
Bottom bouncers and live bait rigs

Not for river fishing, but I live/die by this method on any rocky structure. I would be a lost soul if I couldn’t run bouncers on any northern rocky water…..

I have to admit, it is my number one confidence presentation. (And long line trolling is just a reason to drink beer………)

Three rods, decent quality, high performance and not a lot of money.

    1. St Croix Premiere Spinning 6.0 MF. (PS60MF) Vertical jigging, casting small cranks. If you like a little more length, get the 66. (PS66MF)
    2. St Croix Premiere Spinning 7.6 MLF (PS76MLF) Pitching light jigs, Live bait rigging and slip bobber fishing. This rod is always in my boat. If I had to pick just one rod for Mille Lacs, this would be the one.
    3. If you are going to troll cranks and just put the rod in a rod holder or use planner boards, go to Fleet Farm and buy a cheap fiberglass downrigger rod in a 8 to 9 foot length. I picked up a couple Pinacles last year for $10 bucks each. They work fine for this application.

These 3 rods cover most all the presentations I use on the Mighty Miss.

6’6″ St Croix Avid for all jigging/pitching jigs and casting cranks, model #AS66MF.

The St Croix Wild River Series for trolling cranks and lighter 3-ways(less than 3ozs), model #WC106MMF2.

The St Croix Tidemaster Inshore Series for 3-waying and trolling cranks, model #TC76MM

If I only had to fish with those 3 rods year round, it would be a piece of cake because I do it now

    My choice is St. Croix.
BUT 3 rods are you kidding me. If I post only 3 and my wife finds this post I will have to sell my other 15+ rods.
