I like my St. Croix Avids quite a bit. Diawa makes them and makes the same reel for Cabela’s — Cabela’s Prodigy reel. The Prodigy is on sale right now for $90, so you get a premium reel for under $100. I’d recommend that. I like the 2000 model size, but some might prefer the 1000.

February 18, 2005 at 3:14 pm #344173D man,
I am a strong shimano fan for many years now, however have been disappointed in the performance (from a guide perspective) of the lower end Shimano models. I would reccomend staying with the symetre or the stradic model. I prefer the 1000 models for all my applications. The stradic has been a favorite of mine for many years, but the symetre is a good bang for the buck!
February 18, 2005 at 3:49 pm #344180The Abu-garcia cardinal 600u is only about 6.3 ounces and you couldn’t ask for a better drag. Very nice reel for only $45-55… comes with two spools – one graphite and one aluminum – if you can find one – they may have changed models again. I bought a few for Christmas for the family from fishermans factory outlet ffo-tackle.com … big enough for walleyes and smallies – you could use them for ice fishing if needed also. Chuckles
February 18, 2005 at 4:23 pm #344188I have used the shimano stadic & symetre for 10 years and
had excellant results. Highly recommend checking these out.February 18, 2005 at 6:56 pm #344247The Shimano Stradic MG is on sale at Cabelas for the same price as the regualar Stradic: $119. Great buy!
February 18, 2005 at 7:36 pm #344258The Mitchell Avocet Gold series is a 8BB reel for around $30.00. Excellent reel,I own 6 of them. You’ll want the 2000 model for eye fishing.
Ryan HaleFebruary 18, 2005 at 8:13 pm #344269I just purchased a Quantum Kinetic PTi20 for a 6’9″ Avid I have. It has a titanium bail wire, magnetic bail trip and ceramic drag system. The bail closes sooo nice and the spin is very smooth. I mentioned this reel in another post and asked if anyone had feedback on it (no responses). Hopefully this is the place to ask again. The price is very reasonable for how the reel SEEMS to be but I would like to hear IDA’s take on this reel, it may be what you’re looking for. If I don’t get any feedback I guess I’ll just find out for myself on P4 next weekend
Thanks, Chris

is that the Energy PTi, I do not see a “Kinetic” in the catalog???February 18, 2005 at 10:53 pm #344299I thought of trying the new Mitchell Ideal, you guys go top shelf!
February 18, 2005 at 11:27 pm #344303Here is a link to the Kinetic Kinetic PTi I can’t find reviews for this on the ‘net either so maybe it’s a new model.
February 18, 2005 at 11:39 pm #344308I have got to put in another suggestion of a shimano symetre or the stradic. These reel have worked great for me. The stradic is better but IMO the symetre isnt to far behind. If u want to spend more go with the stradic though u will be happy with it.
Catchandrelease I havent tried the kinetic but once u get out on the water let us know how u like it. I looked at them in the past but went with a symetre 1000 instead. I like the weight of the 1000 but now they dont make this reel and the kinetic is closer in weight than is the new sized shimanos.
D man the if u are asking if the kinetic is in the basspro catolog it should be in there. its next to the energy in my catologs.
HenryPFPosts: 61February 19, 2005 at 3:45 am #344363I got the Quantum Energy PTI20 this year (magnetic bail trip, tit bail, etc) and I found that the balance of this reel is nowhere near the balance of my Shimano Spirex but the energy is just neato lookin.
Could have just been this particular quantum reel, but I can definately feel a slight wobble. I also have a stella, but I can tell you that no way that the stella is worth $500+.
The energy’s drag is better than the stella’s IMHO.
Side note: the calcutta te200/201dc is worth the money.
February 19, 2005 at 3:55 am #344368Don’t know how much you want to spend but I have been very pleased with the Mitchell Avocet Gold 2000. They’re on the lower end in price but the performance has been high end for me.
February 19, 2005 at 8:22 am #344393[quoteI have been very pleased with the Mitchell Avocet Gold 2000.
I think i may have to try one of these mitchells. Wade and Ryan Hale seem very high on them. I am looking to pick up a few reels for a couple of rods that i still put non instant reverse reels on. I looked at them at wal mart and they seemed very smooth for a reel in this price range.
February 19, 2005 at 2:53 pm #344421I have had the chance to run many different reels. For many years I have had a different reel on every rod to see which would last the longest. I have finally switched all my reels over to Pflueger, the President series, and have had to problems at all. With customers in the boat every week you really get to see which reels stand out. I am not sponsored by Pflueger. Just really like the smoothness of these reels.
February 19, 2005 at 10:08 pm #344469me too fireflick im am a pflueger fan. the president series in the lp man it is one smooooooth reel. have had no problems with them at all and i have all the models the solara the trion and the president. i know they have a few newer reels out for this season but im gonna stick with the president. how does that grafite frame hold up jared? i kinda shy away agasint grafite but have u seen their new reel the medalist? its pretty similer 10bb only with an aluminum frame. i think i will pick up one when i go down to bps in march to see how they work. btw gander mountain in ec has the straitc mg for 99 on clearence. plan to get one here sooner or later thats a steal.
February 20, 2005 at 3:34 am #344503The Stradic is a no miss….treated myself to a couple two years ago at a steep discount, and theyre great. However, just bought a Cabelas combo Prestige reel/Fenwick rod several weeks ago, and a Pflueger President yesterday, which are the same reel, down to the part names and numbers on the parts sheet. Very smooth, and less than half the cost of the Stradic. Would recommend any of these, depending on your budget.
February 20, 2005 at 5:04 am #344508First of all anglers we need to know what are you going to use the reel for? I do alot of vertical jigging and I made the mistake buying $100.00 reels, oops wrong move and that will not happen again. I should have spent my money on better electronics. Once you fine the fish you can catch fish with any reel and that’s a proven fact. You learn how to find fish with your fish locater, quota the active fish, and you can catch fish with any reel.
PS. That’s a tip from a pro, not me, just what a pro taught me and I live by it and my reports prove it.
February 22, 2005 at 3:03 pm #344919Thanks again everybody,it looks like I’m stuck on the Shimino Stradic 1000 what a sweet reel!!
February 22, 2005 at 3:28 pm #344931I’m with Flick, Put one on my clarus rod this year and like it very much.
