I am looking for a good trolling rod. I am debiting about a Daiwa rod and a Berkley rod. i would like some input if someone could give me some even if there is a different rod on the market that is better. These rods run about $40. If I could get some input I would like it. Thanks

I have 4 Berkley Lightning Rods, Gary Roach signiture series. For the money, I think they’re great.

FYI, I coupled mine with a Mitchell Avocet Gold spinning reel, 8 ball bearings.

    Trolling rod……… hmmmm……….

How long of a rod are you looking to use? Are you long lining, lead-core, or planer board fishing? Can I assume by your handle that you’re after walleyes?

    eye getter,

I’m sorry, I did not read your post very well. I skipped over the “trolling” part and just read “rod”. I personally use a Cabelas DepthMaster Rod for pulling cranks, coupled with a Diawa Sealine reel. The Berkley rods I noted in my first post are used for live bait rigging and slip bobbers for the most part.

Gary Roach also designed trolling/planer board rods for the Lighting Rod series. They come in 2 sizes and tele-scope down to fit in rod lockers. They have a 8’6″ and 7’10” models. These are awesome trolling rods,I’ll never own a different trolling rod.

I second the Berkeley Gary Roach rods! I have one of the the 8’6″ rods and I use it for long-lining (both with/without snap weights) and planer boards. I’m considering trying it as a bottom bouncer dead rod this year. I like this rod!

Holey Crap! After I posted this I checked the fisherman’s factory outlet and they have this rod for $47!!!

A steal for this rod! Search under LPC861MT or it’s in the casting rod section.

Just passing along a good deal…

This is a trolling rod and I am putting a Daiwa reel on it. I am looking for a rod that is a little more stiff so I can fill the bottom a little better. With the Gary Roach rod can you still feel the bottom with that much bend in them? What kind of line are you running?

I’ve used both Fireline and Powerpro with this rod, with and without mono leader.
What kind of trolling are you wanting to use it for? Long-lining cranks? 3-way’s with cranks or spinners? Lead-lining?
