Garage Rod Rack?

How does everyone store their rods when not in use? I’m looking for something. I used to keep them across the rafters in the garage, but now that would put them above drywall in the attic.

Prices and where you can find them would be appreciated if possible, pictures would be awesome if you can pull it off.

    Gianni,

I use something close to this model on the ceiling of my basement. Actually I had a carpenter at work who made me a few sets. Rod Racks. Or you could use a couple of curtain rods and suspend them from your ceiling also.

My buddy cut notches in two 2×4’s and put little stiff rubber things at the opening of the cut. This way you can push the rod inand do it with the other end and it wont come out.

Me, I use two nails to a pole and hang them horizontally on the garage wall.

Two ways I have done this is #1. use a strong cord and staple loops in the ceiling with the tip going into one loop and the handle in the other #2. buy the vertical rod holders and store them between the studs of the garage wall. Both of these methods does the job. I am sure there will be better methods mentioned but this is how I have done it. JJ

I don’t have a pic, but what I did was take 4 pieces of conduit, 8′ long and put a “Z” bend at each end. The first bend is about 2″ and I flatened it out. Then the next bend is 8″, then the last bend is what “goes across” to the other end where I did the same thing.

Then I screwed them to my ceiling.

2 on one end, 2 on the other end.

I covered the conduit with the pipe insulation tubing.

I spaced the “2 ends” about 8″ apart, so the reel “fits” inbetween. The two section are 5′ apart.

This way, I drop the reels inbetween the “slots” and the rods lay accross the top. I lay the reels at each end. I can comfortably fit about 30 rods this way.

I never have to worry about the rods falling out because the reel is “inbetween” the 2 pieces of conduit at each end. (again, about 8 inch gap between the two pieces.)

The insulation protects the lines and the rods too, from getting beat up.

Cost about $8 and 8 wood screws………And looks fairly nice.

    Does this make sense???

What I did was make one like the photo from Cabela’s. I used some pine boards and copied it. I designed it to hold a few more rods……around 15+ I think. It was pretty easy to do……nothing fancy!

I made mine and the are cheap (what can i say) and work great. I just just used a 2X4 and 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe. I cut the pvc into 12 inch sections and spaced them 12 inchs apart. Next screwed the top of the pvc tube into the 2X4 and liquid nailed the bottom to the remained of the 2X4 and let sit for a day to cure. It holds 8 rods and reels and cost about 2.50 for the tube, I already had the 2X4. Just find a spot in the garage or basement to screw to the wall.

I use a 2X6 nailed flat across the poles in the shed to set the butts on, then on the 2X4 about four to six foot above it screw clothes pins(screws through the springs) and clip the rods in the clothes pins. Fit 14 rods between poles.

I use 3 1×4 boards mounted to the wall… 1 flat base, 1 with holes, and 1 with notches. Here’s a couple quick sketches of how they are mounted and cut…

I’ve made a couple that are really easy – the idea came from Camp Fish that In-Fisherman use to run 15 years ago.

Use a table saw, jig saw or hand saw to cut notches 3/4″ deep in a knot free 1 x 2 slightly wider than your rod blanks are at the 3rd or 4th eyelet from the top. The length of the board will be determined by how many rods you need to store.

Space the notches at whatever intervals you need to keep your reel handles from getting tangled. I think mine are spaced at 6″ which is a little close – I’d go 8 or 10.

After drilling pilot holes use a couple 3″ sheet rock screws to fasten the level board to studs at whatever height is convenient and hang the rods vertically.

Some great ideas, I leave them in the rod locker or laying on the bottom of the boat all winter until I need one.

I actually use those rubber coated equipment hooks that are used for bikes. I just screw them into the rafters about 6 inches apart. You can sometimes find them dirt cheap in the bargin bin or at flea markets/gun shows. I think I paid 0.99 for two, so my storage system cost 8 bucks.

I made a rack out of PVC. Holds 40+ rods. Cheap and perfect for the garage.

Here is one that would work in the garage and in the boat as well. This is on the Walleye Searchers Web page complements of Dave G.

I like to carry a lot of rods and some of my partners are also known to bring along quite a few. By the end of the day we used to have rods scattered all over the boat – what a mess. I built this simple 12 rod rack which essentially is a 2”x4” board cut to fit inside the center of a spare seat post. It was built to be very thin so when in the bow area I can still open all the doors in the floor. It sure does help reduce the clutter in the boat and keeps the rods stored safely.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I ended up doing something like JickyJack’s, and screwed the bottom two boards (1×6) together so that the top board just made 1 1/2″ ‘cups’ to hold the rod butts. The top I used a 1×4, notched the front with a jigsaw, and nailed clothespins in to hang onto the rods. I was a little bit worried about using the “h” cutouts, since I thought the rod-tops might tangle when getting them in and out.

I’d put up pictures, but I can’t find my camera. Maybe later today sometime.

Here’s the rack I built for my basement. It works excellent for my needs, and as you can see, holds all my rods.

With 2 small pins, this rack pivots up to the ceiling and keeps everything out of the way.

Very slick. One question is: How high is the ceiling?

I thought for a while about doing a horizontal rack on the ceiling, but decided that when I got the go-ahead from mission control to go fishing, I didn’t want to waste time with a stepladder to pull rods down. You never know when or for what reasons a mission might be aborted from the control room, regardless of the readiness of the launch platform.
