I know this has come up a few times so i am looking for a recap on rain/weather gear. What are your thoughts?
Cabalas guide wear keeps coming up as some of the bestbut the $400 a suit is a little tough to swallow. There was some talk about some stuff from gander a few weeks ago. What else is there out there?

    Thanks for the input.

I have Gander Mountain Guide Series Tech H2O coat and bibs and i dont think i will ever buy anything else for uninsulated rain/coldweather gear. It is only $180 (versus 400 for guidwear) for the set and very windproof, waterproof, and warm. Just my opinion. Thanks

I have precisely the same set, except that the jacket is a wading jacket that I can use for steelheading. Got them last fall on clearance. I’m very happy with them so far. Last year I wore the jacket and a fleece liner for ~ 90% of all winter days and was plenty warm and dry. I suspect that like Tony, I won’t buy another set of uninsulated foul weather gear, but may step up to Guidewear in the next year or two. -BT

    Mike,
Cabelas has several models to choose from that fit into many price ranges. For example I have one of their cheaper lighter models that is Goretex and works great. I actually use the lighter set far more than the Guide Wear I purchased last year. I think I have the rainy river series.

I went with the Tech H2O gear from Gander. It was on sale at the time for a 100. a piece. For rain and wind protection it has performed well.

Frogg Toggs work great for me. Cheap also. They won’t be good if you are looking for warmth but they are great wind and rain suits.

I’m a Cabela’s Guide Wear man myself, but a friend of mine got some of the Bass Pro Shops XPS 100MPH rain gear, and really likes it. He thinks it every bit as good as the Guide Wear. Only problem with that though is, where are you going to go to try on a set, or even take a look at them?

I have the Cabelas Guidewear for cold wether and a set of the H20Tech from Gander Mountain for warmer weather. I went to Cabelas last weekend and picked up some insolated bibs as my parka is insolated but the bibs aren’t in the set I bought a couple years ago. Really love the Guidewear. Wish I would of bought them many years ago. Thanks, Bill

Guidewear is a great investment. It will last forever. I tried the Bass Pro XPS bibs and they are junk. One pocket and the zipper teeth fell off after only two weeks. Save up if you have too. You will love the Cabelas set.

I have the Bass Pro 100 mph suit and have never looked back. After 8-12 hours of fishing in the pouring rain….when you peel off the rainsuit, you will find your clothes as dry as they were when you put them on….Also the hood which I believe is a critical part in a rainsuit actually gives the ability to be worn and still be able to fish effectively and see what’s going on around you!
But then again I got it for a christmas present so the price wasn’t a factor!

I have the uninsulated Cabelas Guidewear and yes…..it is a lot but it is worth every penny. I can’t believe I ever fished without it.
The best testament to the protection of guide wear would probably come from Walleye-Brat(no offense honey) but she gets cold if it is 70….last Sat night on Mille Lacs she had a sweatshirt, turtle neck and a t-shirt on and an uninsulated Cabelas guidewear jacket and she didn’t get cold. I never get cold and was wearing the same thing and was compfy so for her to be warm enough…well I was shocked. We had extra jackets but she didn’t need one. Bite the bullet you won’t be sorry.

Don’t be silly Waterfowler!!!! He made me buy my own. It kind of helps when you a small female though – the guidewear was actually pretty cheap in a small.

I have to agree with Buckshot though – I love my guidewear!! Other than the color (darn Packers stole Cabela’s color scheme), it’s been a great purchase.

I’d like to say he’s lying to you, but it’s true, I get cold VERY easily…. I think 70 was being conservative.

I wore my jacket in Escanaba prefishing with John, and even in pouring rain, I didn’t get wet or cold. And last Saturday, I was perfectly comfortable on the lake – even when John soaked me on the way home…… nice driving sweetheart. We were out there for 6-7 hours, and I didn’t get cold at all….. if the fish would have been biting, I’d have stayed there all night. If I can stay comfortable in those conditions, everyone else should be toasty warm.

Pruchasing Guidewear for a girlfriend is a serious commitment…..that was back in August and it had only been 4 months so that was moving just a little to fast.
I mean geez….you might as well have said I should buy her a ring too.

Oh yeah….W-Brat….next time we are on the water….you might want to be wearing a life jacket as well as your rain gear…just in case you “fall” out of the boat.

I’m sorry Honey – I’d go fishing with you again, but I’m booked up with Waterfowler for the rest of the season.

    Maybe next year.

W-Brat….If you are booked with Waterfowler you are going to be changing diapers more than catching fish….between him and the new baby….that is a lot of diapers.

Not to mention if he does take you fishing….how do I say this…..well someone “stole” the second console out of his boat so you are totally exposed to the elements and any spray you “might” get riding in a Crestliner.

I wish there was something I could say to be a smart a** Waterfowler….but after what W-Brat said….well…I think I will just have a beer….an Old Milwaukee….cuz it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Way to go Buckshot. Another Ranger snob joins the crowd. Look at my boat, isn’t she shiny and perty!!

Pull your nose out of the clouds, it will catch more fish than that Ranger will this fall/winter. I’ll even give that guide wear a true test. When I’m done with you, you could be a spokesman for Guidewear. Have you saw the Columbia commercials??
