I just bought a Quantum ultra light rod/reel combo I saw it was an IM8. I went out to sturgeon bay, first cast my rod tip broke . Do IM8’s have bad reps or should I bother to buy another one? Any replies would be great

What were you casting with when the tip broke? The IM-8 is a modulus rating…it really doesn’t make it a good or bad rod. ULs are generally softer slower actions, designed to cast very light lures.
A quick forceful cast with a standard 1/4 oz or heavier lure could easily snap a rod tip.

A huge problem I have is seeing the way rod and reel combos are handled in the store by customers and employees. Take a look close sometime at the abuse these NEW rods get. Look on the rack sometime and count how many have troubles. Also, with any graphite rod you have to be careful not to get nicks or cracks as that weakens area to breakage more. If you were not, and havent abused this rod I would suspect a defect.

I would think any decent place, would exchange this for you.

I cant say anything bad about IM8 rods. My guess is that the rod was previously damaged by employees before u got the rod. I would let it keep u from getting another one.

Tom, I was casting with a small slip bobber with 1 splitshot, a golden hook with a night crawler, would that brake the rod?

I highly doubt that would be enough to break that rod. I suggest you take it back, explain the situation. I’m betting the store will replace it. If not, contact the manufacturer. There is a warranty, just more hassle for you.

As for why, the rod was likely damaged somewhere in it’s life. I watched customers beat the snot out of rods when I worked at Gander. I watched employees break rods. Some people just don’t get that graphite is brittle. The rod simply falling against the edge of the boat could lead to a break in the future.

Good luck getting it replaced. Get another IM8, I find it unlikely you’ll have the same problem.
