I need help for a friend who is looking to buy a fish finder for his bow trolling motor. He wants to spend $175-250, and fishes mostly rivers with depth less than 40′. Looking for recommendations for him. He has a Garmin 240 in dash, and was thinking of using another for the bow, but I was wondering about possible interference between the two. Also, what type of transducer should he get with it? And, thirdly, where is the best place to buy. He lives in Illinois. Any help would be appreciated!

Rooster, I run Garmin 240’s one on the dash and one on the bow. I have not had any problems with interference. Garmin offers a smaller puck tranducer for mounting on trolling motors.

Dave, thanks for the referral. Rooster, the garmin 240 is a nice unit but they (Garmin) have recently released the Garmin 250 which is an upgrade over the 240, price at $224.99. That’d be my pick in the price range you mentioned. With him being in IL there would be no sales tax and shipping is free so it’s a pretty good deal. He won’t have to worry about interference if he mounts the transducer on the trolling motor and has the other ducer mounted on the transom in the rear. That’d be far enough apart to avoid crossing signals at most depths.

    Hope this helps. Thanks, Wade

Thanks guys! I think I’ll recommend the 250 to him, and if I like it I may get one too! Wade, does Garmin offer a puck transducer for mounting the 250 on the trolling motor? If so, what is the difference in price?

    Thanks again,

    John

Garmin offers the trolling motor tranducer and the hardware to mount it for ABOUT 85.00.

Rooster, with the 250 they are calling the transducer a transom mount OR trolling motor transducer, saying it works for either application. A guy can also order a 250 without a transducer and then add a puck ducer. I don’t have it in front of me but the total cost ends up being about $25 more – about $250 total.

I have not heard feedback on how well the regular transducer works on the trolling motor yet. Maybe someone has tried it???

    Thanks, Wade

One reason I like using the trolling motor transducer instead of the regular is the 14 degree cone compared to the 20 degree cone.
