Do the Garmin chartplotters with the internal ant. give a good signal? I want to know, because of the possibilty of bring my GPS on another boat with a 12V power supply. Will it work with a canvas top up?

My lowrance GPS has a internal antenna and it works fine, I suspect it should work fairly good under canvas as long as it can “see” to the sides, like my gps works ok if I’m holding it in my hands in my truck, but works much better in the window.

Believe it or not I turned mine on in the garage this morning in the garage with door closed and picked a signal and locked in.
    I have the Garmin 162.

I also have a Garmin 162 and I love it. Best equipment purchase I’ve made for the price. And no, I don’t work for them.

I have two 188’s, and never had issues with signals. They are awesome units in my opinion.

I’m kicking around the idea this off season of either the 276c portable unit, or the 172c for a bigger screen. Alot of times I fish on another guys boat and I like to bring my locations and contours. I was thinking of using the 172c and making it protable with a case and power supply. Can the Bluechart chips be used on 2 different units?

I believe so. There should not be any reason you can’t load the data to another unit.

Both the Garmin 276C and the Garmin 172C are very good units. For fishing, I’d suggest the 172C for the larger screen. Scott Steil (In-DepthAngling pro staff) uses the 172C and has given it the thumbs up. Maybe Scott will comment on that if he sees this post.

One other note, Garmin has introduced a couple new software products for fishermen: The Garmin Minnesota LakeMaster ProMap and the Garmin MapSource U.S. Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots . Both of these mapping systems offer depth contours and other aids for inland lakes. Might help improve an angler’s time on the water!
