I heard a rumor that there might be a new tax imposed on import motors (Yammy, specifically) in the near future. Anyone know if there’s any truth to this? I’m thinking of getting a yamaha 4-stroke, and I don’t want to pay any more than I have to!

    Thanks.

Yes, that is true. Here is a link to the US Dept. of Commerce website with additional info. Yammys will have a 22.52% tarriff. If you have any questions, let me know. I have followed this story closely.

    DOC webpage.

Mercury filed a lawsuit claiming that Japanese companies were dumping motors-meaning selling them for less in the USA then they do at home. The DOC will monitor the pricing on Japanese motors. Since Mercury imports powerheads they also will have to pay the tarriff Jon mentioned. Another sound move by a Brunswick company!

I believe that 4 stroke Yamaha and Mercury are basically the same motor. So what does that tell you to do?

There currently is no tariff imposed. The DOC will not even rule on this until about Dec. 24 2004. If the allegations are found to be true they may then choose to impose cash deposits.

If an almost 23% margin (30% markup) is dumping. Then how much is Merc marking up their O/Bs 40-50-60%?????

I am pretty sure that Yamaha has not had to under price their O/Bs in order to sell them her.

At one time Yamaha was making parts and portions of merc’s 4 stroke line-up but I believe that relationship ended a couple years ago.

If you look at the smaller motors ID tag on the side will say manufactured in Japan.

A quick call to Destry Foyte at LaCannes found what we’re looking for. Merc makes the vast majority of their own 4 strokes now or gets help from Tohatsu on the small kicker sized motors. Yamaha still makes the 75, 90 & 115 non-EFI 4 strokes. Larger than 115 it’s all merc again.
