Hey folks I have been buying expensive rods and reels for the past couple years, but I tend to be a pretty careless when I am catching fish and seem to break rod tips, bend reel bails. etc. Anyways I am a poor college student so what I am wondering is what are some cheaper rod reel combos that are going to give me decent performance without breaking my bank account. Probably under $80 or so for my bass fishing. Thanks for the suggestions.
P.S. I know I should just be more careful but fishing is do darn much fun!

yeah I guess I am not so worried about the reels but the rods seem to break all the time be it from me being stupid or breaking tips while fighting fish. What rod dealers seem to have the best warranty even if I have to pay some. Thanks again.

Sounds like you may want to consider using fiberglass rods.

Try a hollow glass rod! Graphite is actually brittle and if not taken care of properly breaks easily. As long as sensitivity isnt big on your list St Croix makes a nice glass rod as do other manufacturers.

I would second the Okuma reels…….GREAT reels for the price

as far as rods, you should go to cabela’s and buy one of their rods. They have a life time garuantee……even if you step on it and break it in half, you can just bring it back and they’ll give you a brand new one . (and after a couple years, if it starts getting worn, just snap it over your leg )

If you are breaking rod tips and dont care all that much for super sensitive rods, get an Ugly Stick. My son broke 3 rods before we settled un a Ugly Stick. He hasnt managed to break this one… Lord knows he has tried….

2nd the Ugly Stick. Only issue I would ever speak up on would be weight. If you are used to casting a nice Graphite rod, the fiberglass Ugly sticks may be a little heavy after hours of casting. Other than that, they are great rods. I would think a great crank rod, as it has a slower taper.

Check Glayans. I have a couple of Galyans IM8 walleye rods and I like them just as well as the G-loomis I have and they are about $40 bucks…$29.99 if you catch them on sale.
Personally I like to put more money into the reel than the rod….a cheap reel is more likely to fail when you need it.

Like Buckshot said, check these outdoor stores (gander, cabelas, galyans, ect…). They all have there own line of rods, which I am almost positive are made by the same company (A-boss), might be wrong, but they are a good rod for the price you pay.

I have many gander rods. Nice rods, reasonably priced, and if you every break one, just bring it in. They replace them on the spot. I’ve had to do that twice this year, broke one fighting a fish, broke the other trying to catch my beverage as I cruising down the river.

Sounds like you need to go to Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops and look at their combos they offer. There is every type of configuration at every dollar level that will give you a decent rod/reel setup………….If you want to keep things under $80…..

Yep….. if you’re looking for something to beat on, an Ugly Stick will take about everything you’ve got. But I don’t like the weight of them nor am I fond of the mid to lower strength models. The tip is so flimsy that it really doesn’t aid in anything beyond not breaking. It’s not sensitive enough for feel and a minnow on the end can confuse you on a struggling bait or light biting fish. The stronger models are what I prefer, but they are heavy!

For the mid to lighter strength rods, all I’ve heard about the outdoor specialist stores like Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mt., Galyans……. I’d go that way if they’re going to replace the rods so readily and easily. They are a real decent rod for the money you pay and the upper grade graphite models won’t make you miss the upper grade brand names too much. I think Galyan’s is a little sparse on their variety but the others are pretty good.

For a cheap spinning reel, you have to remember the issue you’ve mentioned. I could recommend Shimano Sedona’s but their bail isn’t any more guaranteed than anyone elses bail. However, Quantum makes a reel with a bendable, titanium bail, that is magnetically activated for closure, so it has no bail springs to break! I can’t remember the model name but they retail for $69.00. Go to Ebay and do a search on “Quantum”. Somewhere in those search results, you should find the model I’m talking about. I have the Pulse models, which has the same bail mechanics but absent of the titanium wire. I think, by construction and relativity to your example, this is THE reel to check into.

As for a cheap, excellent performing caster, I just came off a weekend of testing the Pinnacle Tara. The brake on the spool was so great that I could cast great distance and never even needed to slide my thumb on the line! I’ve NEVER had a reel that would set up that well. With the wind, against the wind, across the wind, this reel ROCKED! I’ve looked on Ebay to see if there were any available for cheap and as of yesterday, there wasn’t a single Tara to be found! Listen, if Ebay doesn’t have it, it’s a good reel! I saw them at my local WalMart this spring for either $59 or $69….. I can’t recall, but I think they’re sold out now. They never stock too many reels. Anyway, I haven’t tried and tested every caster on the market, but I’ll tell you this……. I’ve tried an awful lot of them and if you want to stay below $80, this one has my vote hands down.

Good luck in your search and don’t be impatient. Shop around and get the best performance/warranty for your dollar!

I have to second Stillakid. Shimano Sedona is a good reel, and also the Spirex, I think retails around $50. I’ve got both and they are great for the money. If you’re looking for a caster, I’d recommend the Quantum 1310mg. Solid reel for $50. Gander Mountain’s Guide series is a good rod. I’ve also tried the Rapala Sportsman and Signature rods and these have performed very well for me. I think the Sportsman run about $30 at Fleetfarm, but the Signature might be more than you’re willing to spend. I’ve also heard good things about Cabela’s and Gaylan rods but haven’t tried them.

I have to agree with Dave on the Berkley Lightning Rods. I have 4 Gary Roach series Lightning Rods and couldn’t be happier. They run about $50 I think. I coupled mine with the Mitchell Avocett Gold (2500 I believe?). They run about $30 most places. 8 ball bearings and have been very durable. If you get the Avocett, be sure to get the Gold, not the cheaper Silver models. I run 2 with Fireline and 2 with mono. Great set-up!

I just bought a Birkley Lightening Rod. It is a great rod. It is fairly sensitive and seems to be very durable I also use the Ugly stick. All of my rods have Shamanno reels on them. Most of my setups are $80-$100.

My vote for a low budget spinning reel that has good sensitivity, light, and some backbone is the Rapala Long Cast Series. $39.

i sure didn’t mind my new guide series reel that i picked up from gander mountain for $29.99. I have used it on my cheapo 7’6″ rods and it seems to cast a mile and reels them big bucket mouths in ok. check it out.

Try this. I build rods and it is really easy to repair them and it wont take long for you to learn how to do it. they are not as good as new but when you break a $250 rod it’s not a total loss.real repair is also very easy with almost all the manuals online now days, and you can order the parts from them also. If I can help ya in getting set up send me a PM.
