Any idea what year this Merc. is?

    I believe it is a early to mid 80’s, dealer says it’s an ’82 (same as boat), but I don’t know??? I don’t need to know the exact year, but maybe something close.

    Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    It looks like my dad’s and I think his is an 84.

    The blue stripe indicates late 70’s (’79 I believe) to ’84. Get me the serial number and I can narrow it down in a flash for ya.

    Oh, and they didn’t make the 70hp from ’84-’86 so.

    If you call a Mercury dealer with the serial number they will tell you the year.Good luck.

    The numbers in the serial number represent letters. I just cant remember what the word is that you use to figure this out. Someone told me what it was about 2 years ago in a post on this site. You might be able to find it there.

    It’s a 1982.

    Here’s the skinny…

    Merc made these 3 cylinder 70hp motors the following years:

    1960 – 1962
    1976 – 1983
    1987 – 1989

    Your serial number is fits in between 5974683 – 6279959 which is for model year 1982.
