I’m looking for a Sun fishing reel and pole, designed for 8lb mono, on average less than 2 lb. fish, that’s durable, has easy maintenance, is lightweight, has medium casting ability, is inexpensive, and can handle snags. Any suggestions?

I would take a look at one of the pflueger combos. Not the best rods and reels on the market but would definitely fit what it sounds like you’re looking for

I have several Cabelas trail tourney 6 foot UL rods. 2 Year replacement warranty. They go on sale around $35 from time to time. Several good reels in the $30 to 40 range too. Good luck shopping!

Sunnies for 8#? At least consider 6#, what you lose snag wise between 8 and 6 is negligible with added benefit of casting distance. Trying 6# stren magmathin and so far fantastic, identical to my dads panfish setup with 4# xl.

I would suggest a 7′ rod with a soft top end, line it up with a smaller reel of your choice and 4# test max. A 7′ rod will give you great casting length with lighter jigs and set ups for panny’s. You will have a riot with the soft give on that long rod that will make any “kid” smile and you will always have some back bone if you need it on a larger fish. Been fishing panny’s with 7’+ rods for a few years now and I am never going back to any shorter ultra lights. Try it – you’ll like it

PS: Cant find a 7′ you like commercially? Go custom

The Cabelas rods are actually on sale for 40.00 right now.
