Solar Panel for charging batteries on board

Hi, My friend has a solar panel which he uses to charge two batteries hooked in paralell on his camping trailer. He says he hasn’t used a charger for the batteries in two years. Why wouldn’t this work on my boat for my trolling batteries? I have two hooked in paralell for my 12 volt system. The solar charger costs $40 or thereabouts. Any thoughts on this from you guys and gals?

I don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t work in theory. I know a guy who uses solar panels to recharge batteries for an electric fence.

However…..Does the guy with the camper trailer have anything that sucks up power like a trolling motor? How big are his panels? I’d think they’d take up a lot of room in the boat. And how carefully do you have to be about pointing them at the sun? Keep us posted on how this works out. I’d like think that the sun is good for something other than chasing the Bass out deeper

River Ridge Custom Canoes sells these solar panels specifically for their canoes which are equipped with trolling motor and battery. If you have questions I would suggest you contact them. riverridgecustomcanoes.com

I have thought about it also and I know Cabelas sells them in differnt sizes. The guy I rent ice houses with on Lake of the Woods uses them on all his houses and he won’t rent a house with out one. The only conflict I see is where to mount the panel(s) so they are not in the way.

If I recall correctly, the panels only put out about a half amp tops. If you fish once/week, it would probably work out, but it doesn’t take your trolling motor long to eat that charge at 40 amps. For a camper, the highest power draw items are probably the lights.
