On my last boat I ran a LOW 520 while running the tiller kicker. As I dream of my next boat and rigging it, I am wondering what everyone else is running while at the kicker.

My kicker is tied in so I don’t have the exact same application on my boat, but in running other boats from the kicker, I can tell you that it really depends how close to your face you can get that thing. At the same time, I like running split screen when trolling of almost any type, one view on the map chip, the other on the down-sonar. Your map view is limited on a 5″ screen, so I’d go larger there if at all possible. This is especially true on bigger water bodies with larger and more complex structure. I don’t think you need an LED flatscreen back there or anything, but a 7 – 8″ screen seems like a sweet spot if you can afford it.

Hds 8 over an Hds 7 by a mile. the * is much bigger and clearer also allowing 3 screens at once instead of only 2.

Good point. Thanks for mentioning that.

I’d agree, I wish I would have went with an 8 vs my 7, it would be huge to have the extra screen and size. At the time the 7 was a stretch for my budget so the 8 was out of the picture.

Depending on the budget you can get an elite 7 that you can split 3 ways with downscan, alittle bigger screen then the HDS7 and alittle cheaper then the HDS.

    How about 2 HDS5’s networked for less $$ than 1 HDS8.

Or 2 Elite-7s also for less than the 8.

I would like to keep it at one unit as to try to keep the look cleaner.

Depending on what kind of trolling I am doing, I like to hold the rod. I think a 10″ screen might actually get in the way when installed on the Gunnel.

Honestly by that logic I would argue they all may get in the way. In a tiller, I would be hard pressed to consider anything smaller than 10″ screens. Put it on a double swing arm and move it accordingly.
