My motor seems to be overheating, when I’m trolling @ 800rpm. The water pump seems to be peeing really good. When it’s in neutral it’s running@ 1000rpm, there’s no issue whatsoever. But when I’m trolling @ 800rpm the water peeing out seem to get really warm. Is this a water pump issue or thermostat, or something else. Can anyone help?

I have replaced water pumps that are still peeing fine. The problem is that with 2 or 3 of the 5 fins missing you only wet a fraction of the water volume through the engine that you need but they may sill pee fine.

Especially if you have been running in water with lots of sediment or the pump is 5 years old or more I would start there.

I had that same issue once, I noticed the water coming out of the p hole was warmer than normal, had a new water pump installed and they told me it was good to go. Took it out to the river, got it off the trailer and the alarm goes off. Long story short, I had damage to my piping where the copper enters the motor. When my mechanic called Merc, they were aware of the problem as water gets trapped on top of a runner gasket and if your running the motor in the winter it doesn’t allow the water to drain back down to your prop, thus when that water freezes shits gonna break. Do you use your motor during freezing weather?

The alarm may be for your oil injection?

I had that problem with my 1995 50 hp Merc. It was the low oil alarm for the oil injection. I had my mechanic disconnect it, as it would beep when I was trolling at very low speed. It was not an issue for me, as I am anal enough that I ALWAYS check my injector oil levels before the boat leaves my garage. Good luck with everything.

I have a 1994 60HP Merc. It would start to holler at me after trolling for a while. Replacing the water pump fixed the problem. As far as the pee hole goes…..there was water coming out of it before I replaced the pump. After replacing the pump the water comes BLASTING out of there. For example, at idle the stream penetrates about an inch down into the water behind the boat.

I have a 1997 60 hsp Mariner and the alarm stayed on steady a couple of weeks ago and it was the sensor. $318.00 for the repair.

More than likely it is your water pump, however there is a chance it’s your oil tank. I have seen lots of sensors in those tanks fail over the years. But if you can idle in neutral with out any alarm then that is probably not the issue. It’s very hard to judge whether a pump is good off of the tell tail because some tell tails come off the block low so it will show water even though there isn’t water on the top of the block. The only really good way to know is to have a water psi gauge to know how much pressure it’s putting out.

x2. If it’s on all the time (like as soon as you turn the key on after is sits overnight), it’s likely an alarm module. I had one go out a couple years back, and the one on my MIL’s pontoon just went out on us last week. Annoying.
