I am looking to replace my boat and now looking at one that has this motor on it and I am a Mercury man.

Does anyone have any knowledge about this motor ? It has very low hours.

    Any help is appreciated

It’s a Honda outboard, it’ll run forever. Not the fastest or lightest but one of the more durable motors made.

I owned one, it was a pretty good motor. I went through a water pump every 2.5 years like clock work. The motor ran excellent and the only mechanical issue I had was a safety switch and prop seals, and I ran the hell out of that motor.

Here is what you want to take into consideration, that motor was a bit#%h to start when the weather cold cold in November, once you got it running you were set for the day. Very sensitive on starts in general, there was a sweet spot on the throttle and choke and if you don’t find it, well you better have a full battery.

Another issue is parts were tough, when I had to do repairs it seemed like simple things like water pumps and seals were back ordered and took a long time to get. Like I said earlier that motor did a great job, but if you can swing it spend a little more for EFI.

I think that is the same block as my ’01 90 merc 4stroke. I haven’t had a lot of on the water time with it yet, but is seems to do just fine so far. Spent $700 with my mechanic after I bought it to repair the damage done by the previous owner and general maintenance (set screws on cylinders were messed with and out of whack, new water pump, 2 new fuel pumps and new latch on the hood plus all new fluids). That 90 is on a lund pro sport 1600, and she pushes it around just fine, purrs like a kitten in idle, not the hole shot I had in the 16′ tracker with the 60hp on it, but this boat weighs about twice as much.

I will have a full week long worth of running it up at Kab. after next week, but I assume you need to make a decision before then.

** Edit – Fuel pump seals had dryed up from lack of use (guy only used it a couple times a year), if its sat a while be sure to check them.

I have the 50 hp and haven’t done anything to it for 9 years and it’d been great. Like others said, not the fastest but it’s sure been reliable. (Except for the props, they keep breaking blades off.. I think it’s a defect)
