Horse apiece. They both have their lemons, but overall are both good motors.

    Evinrude Etec.

Nothing more than personal experience here though as I have pretty much zero experience with Mercury.
The 175hp Etec I had on my last boat, started great, ran great and was the smoothest motor I’ve ever had when it came to shifting in and out of gear.

Having been in rigs with both, here are my personal opinions.

The opti is proven and very reliable, especially in 115-150 models. Love the opti growl when cracked wide open (not really much louder than a 4 stroke, but is definitely a different sound).

The etec is a pretty smooth running motor, and actually trolls down fairly decent (for a 150). Slightly quieter than the opti.

I will say this though, after the terrible experience I had trying to find a tilt/trim for a johnson motor, I consider parts availability big time in purchases. That’s a part of the reason I have an opti and pro-kicker on order for my new rig.

The Evinrude 150 is very good motor and it pushes over 160 hp. That and the additional features of no main. for 3 years and push button winterize is great for this area.

    In this order:
    1. Evinrude
    2. Merc Optimax
    3. Yamaha HPDI doesn’t have a 3 star CARB rating or a 25″ shaft. Not even sure how committed they are to this engine. 2 year warranty only.

Yamaha has discontinued there HPDI line of outboards I have a 200 HPDI and love it. Ive also owned 3 four strokes and fished many tournaments and I agree with above.

    1.) YAMI
    2.)E Tec HO
3.)MERC (Seen almost one per tournament blow a powerhead in big tourneys with 150 boats.

Pretty much true. But the thing to consider is the dealer service after the sale.
